      Job Description

      The research specialist II for the Microbial Ecology and Microbiome Interactions Lab is pivotal in overseeing and coordinating day-to-day activities within the BSL2 and BSL 3 laboratories. This individual will ensure the smooth operation of experiments, manage resources, and support research endeavors. Research Specialist II will work closely with the PI, laboratory manager, research team, and external collaborators. The Research Specialist II, under general supervision research work involving performance of assignments which may involve planning and directing certain phases of research project.

      Required Education and Experience:

      • B.S. in Microbiology or Molecular Biology.
      • Six years of related experience.

      Preferred Education and Experience:

      • M.S. in Virology, Microbiology or Molecular Biology
      • Prior experience working in a BSL 3 laboratory.

      Responsibilities:

      • Conduct cell culture, virus propagation, and culture and purification.
      • Collects samples, performs analysis on samples, and extracts measurement data from experiments. Implements and maintains data collection and summarization of field trials.
      • Responsible for performing experiments, compiling, and analyzing data obtained.
      • Record keeping and compliance information for projects.
      • Computes quantitates and extends projections.
      • Strong organizational skills, with an attention to detail.
      • Develops and maintains training materials for external users. Trains students or others in laboratory and field research and methods.
      • Ability to work independently and work cooperatively with others.
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with team members and external partners.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      Required special knowledge, skills and abilities:

      • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
      • Ability to exert heavy force.
      • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
      • Good communication and computer skills
      • Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others

      Preferred special knowledge, skills and abilities:

      • Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques and equipment relevant to microbial research.
      • Demonstrated experience working with bacterial and viral pathogens classified at BSL-2 and BSL-3.
