- The position requires a high degree of flexibility, independence, and willingness to participate in multiple activities in providing support to both patients and caregivers.
- The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to converse comfortably with patients and their caregivers, as well as clinical and administrative staff.
- Attend and participate in interdisciplinary meetings and staff meetings as needed.
- Work collaboratively with clinicians in the Acute Psychiatry Service to assist with patients’ discharge from the emergency setting to other psychiatric or medical settings.
- Collaborates and consults with patient, families, professionals, and providers inside and outside the Hospital to develop and implement pre-admission, inpatient, post hospital, and outpatient care.
- Check in with patients and families during their ED stay to provide updates on treatment plan, status, and answer questions.
- Makes referrals to partial hospital programs or other alternate levels of care by providing documentation to support patients’ transfer to other facilities. This may include preparing information to fax, copying portions of the medical record, and scheduling intake appointments for patients. It will also include arranging outpatient follow-up appointments for patients being discharged which may include obtaining new psychiatry and therapy appointments and obtaining new PCP or medical /surgical appointments.
- Refers to and collaborates with interdepartmental specialists and programs, outside agencies, facilities, payors, and other relevant community resources.
- Assists with administrative duties and data entry, including timely and accurate reporting of Boston Emergency Service Team (BEST) activities via the BEST database, and updating staff and patient resources.
- Provide coverage for the clinical social worker and other psychiatry staff other as appropriate.
- Perform other duties to support clinical care of patients as needed
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, Bachelor of Social Work or comparable training highly desirable
- At least 2-3 years of work experience in the mental health care field preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, customer service and advocacy skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent judgment and ability to work independently in a unique position

!*!GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Working as part of a collaborative care team with the residents, attending physicians, and nurses in the Acute Psychiatry Service (APS), the primary responsibility of the Resource Specialist is to facilitate referrals for psychiatric patients in the ED to psychiatric hospitals and inpatient substance abuse treatment centers. Receiving general direction from the Lead Social Worker and APS physicians, this position will work to receive prior authorizations from third party payers in order to assure a seamless and timely transition of these patients out of the APS and into an appropriate next level of care.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position includes phone/fax contact with other mental health facilities, preparing information to fax, copying portions of the medical record, scheduling intake appointments for patients. Additionally, this includes arranging outpatient follow-up appointments for patients being discharged, which may include obtaining new psychiatry and therapy appointments, obtaining new PCP or medical/surgical appointments and documenting appointments in the CAS system. The bed-finding process involves: 1) contacting the patient’s insurance to ascertain contracted facilities and to get prior-approval, and 2) contacting psychiatric hospitals (or other resources) for bed availability and to relay clinical patient information and needs. In cases where placement may not be necessary, the Resource Specialist finds and refers patients to appropriate community resources.
