      About the Position: This position is located within the Directorate of Medicine Respiratory Therapy Department at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California and will primarily perform Respiratory Care within the NICU/PICU, however, may perform additional duties throughout the hospital to include: Emergency Medical Services, Adult Medical/Surgical Wards, Adult Critical Care, and Pulmonary Function Testing.

      Duties


      • Be an expert in the science of maintaining spontaneous breathing and supporting with artificial ventilation.
      • Assist with the daily clinical and administrative functions of the Pulmonary Clinic as prescribed by Pulmonologist to include but not limited to support to the sleep clinic or support for the patient check in processes.
      • Assist physicians and other clinical staff during special respiratory procedures, placing, adjusting, or removing endotracheal tubes and providing respiratory support during conscious sedation outside of the operating room.
      • First assistant in bronchoscopy and is expected to have full knowledge of the function and the maintenance of the bronchoscope and all its associated tools, suction equipment and video equipment.
      • Be proficient in airway anesthesia, the bronchoscopy procedure, bronchoscopy biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage, endobronchial ultrasound, cry biopsy, and all the pertinent cytopathology and microbiology techniques as well as specimen processing.
      • Custodian of all the supplies and equipment required for respiratory therapy procedures, airway tools and devise, bronchoscopy equipment and supplies, and pulmonary function equipment and supplies and test gases.
      • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds in critical care or ward areas when needed in order to provide technical expertise in the use of respiratory support devices and the management of patients with respiratory illness

      Requirements


      • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
      • Must have Basic Life Support (or recognized equivalent) certification.
      • Must have American Cardiovascular Life Support (or recognized equivalent) certification.
      • Must have Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification and Pediatric Advances Life Support (PALS) certification
      • Must follow Naval Medical Center San Diego Occupational Health office requirements for immunizations.
      • This position may require on-call duties; work overtime to include weekends and federal holidays, out of cycle, or unscheduled training or on an emergency basis.
      • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination.
      • This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
      • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
      • his position is designated "Mission Essential." In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
      • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position may be designated as "Emergency-Essential". Emergency-Essential designation takes precedence over any transportation agreement or military recall status.
      • The work will require the incumbent to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts, extended hours or other schedules common to hospital operations.

      Basic Requirement for Respiratory Therapist:

      Specialized Experience
      : One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating respiratory therapy patients, maintaining respiratory therapy equipment, and administering respiratory therapy treatments to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

      OR

      Education
      : Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Respiratory Therapy.

      OR

      Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
