- Preoperative patient care: The nurse assesses patients scheduled for surgery, reviews medical histories, and ensures all necessary preoperative tests and preparations are completed. They educate patients and their families about the surgical process, answer questions, and address concerns.
- Intraoperative support: During surgery, the Surgical Nurse assists the surgical team by preparing the operating room, arranging equipment and supplies, and ensuring a sterile environment. They help position the patient, prepare surgical instruments, and provide necessary medications or solutions as directed.
- Patient monitoring: The nurse monitors patients' vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, throughout the surgical procedure. They observe the patient's condition, respond to any changes or complications, and communicate with the surgical team as needed.
- Postoperative care: After surgery, the nurse provides post-anesthesia care, closely monitoring patients as they recover from anesthesia. They manage pain and discomfort, assess surgical incisions, administer medications, and monitor for any adverse reactions or complications.
- Patient and family education: The Surgical Nurse educates patients and their families about postoperative care instructions, including wound care, medication administration, and signs of complications. They offer emotional support, address concerns, and provide resources for additional information or assistance.
- Documentation and record-keeping: Accurate and thorough documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes is essential. The nurse maintains detailed records of surgical procedures, medications administered, and any complications or adverse events that occur.
- Collaboration and communication: The Surgical Nurse collaborates with the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals. They effectively communicate patient information, participate in team meetings, and provide input regarding patient care plans.
- Infection control and safety: Nurses in the Surgical Patient Care Unit adhere to strict infection control protocols to minimize the risk of surgical site infections and other healthcare-associated infections. They follow safety guidelines, such as correct handling and disposal of sharps and adherence to sterile techniques.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or equivalent.
- Active registered nurse (RN) license in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Prior experience in surgical nursing or a related field is typically required.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and sterile techniques.
- Proficient in patient assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Familiarity with infection control practices and a commitment to patient safety.
- Basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certifications may be required or preferred.
