This is varied and responsible work in coordinating and performing safety related functions and activities.

JURISDICTION YEARLY RATEEXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. CITY OF MOBILE $41,541 - $66,410
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : Completion of two years of college level coursework from a recognized college or university in safety management, industrial hygiene, business administration, environmental health and safety, or a closely related field, preferably supplemented by attainment of Safety Professional Certification, and a minimum of three years experience in safety and risk management; or a combination of education and experience related to these requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence. May be required to furnish own automobile.
Good knowledge of Federal, State, and local safety related laws, standards, and regulations.
Good knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends related to occupational health and safety.
Good knowledge of current and accepted methods and strategies related to safety practices and principles.
Good knowledge of investigative methods and analysis techniques related to occupational accidents, injuries, and emergencies.
Some knowledge of workers compensation rules and regulations.
Some knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of budget preparation and administration.
Ability to assess workplace situations and hazards and to recommend appropriate corrective measures and strategies.
Ability to plan and organize one’s own daily work routine.
Ability to establish priorities for the efficient performance and completion of work.
Ability to communicate with all employees, both orally and in writing.
Ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and maintain insurance eligibility requirements of the employing agency.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects or materials.
Ability to perform tasks at a keyboard or workstation for extended periods of time.

Promotes effective safety and loss prevention programs.
Identifies and addresses safety and health related hazards.
Assists in the development, implementation, and enforcement of health and safety related plans, policies, procedures, and programs.
Advises management and employees on safety related issues and makes recommendations.
Conducts job site and facility safety inspections.
Provides feedback and information to departments inquiring about safety related issues and recommendations.
Implements and maintains a departmental safety reporting system, to include reports and follow-up.
Conducts scheduled departmental safety audits.
Monitors the correction of unsafe practices and hazards.
Acts as coordinator for the jurisdiction’s safety committee.
Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars.
Assists and participates in the formulation of the safety budget.
Coordinates, conducts, evaluates, and recommends safety training programs.
Investigates accidents and gathers investigative data to prepare reports and statistics.
Assists the Risk Manager in the identification of causes and trends for accidents, injuries, and losses.
Tracks safety related occurrences and data to prepare reports.
Investigates safety related complaints and provides recommendations for the resolution of complaints and issues.
Evaluates and addresses risks related to safety and security, as well as hazardous materials and environmental concerns.
Assists in the development, organization, evaluation, and updating of the disaster preparedness plans for the organization.
Performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK : An employee in this class is responsible for taking a proactive role in coordinating and performing safety related field and office work to support the risk management functions of the employing jurisdiction, including the investigation of accidents, conducting safety training, and conducting safety inspections. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures under the general supervision of the Risk Manager, Safety Manager or other supervisor, and supervision may be exercised over clerical employees.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION : Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
