      OVERVIEW:

      The SAM Summer Camp Counselor is a member of the Seattle Art Museum Education department. This counselor will assist Teaching Artists and program staff to provide meaningful, hands-on experiences for children and families. They will facilitate art experiences and provide creative guidance, classroom management, and mentorship for children entering grades 1 - 6 during a three week summer camp.

      There will be four openings for Summer Camp Counselors this summer. Interviews will be scheduled during the first half of May 2024.

      FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Manager of Teen and Family Programs COMPENSATION: $19.97 per hour for Counselors, $21 per hour for Senior Counselors

      BENEFITS: Temporary and on-call employees are able to enroll in our company’s 403b plan. Employees will also accrue sick leave at a rate of .0385 per hour worked. Additional benefits include access to fitness facility, and two guest passes to SAM each quarter.

      EXPECTED TIME COMMITMENT:

      SAM Camp Training Day : Monday, July 1 (8 hrs)
      Camp Dates: July 8 - July 26, Mon–Fri, 30 to 40 hrs per week

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      1. Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all SAM campers and promote positive social interactions.
      2. Lead, create, and facilitate age-appropriate activities and games for elementary aged children in collaboration with SAM Camp counselors and staff.
      3. Provide developmentally appropriate guidance and support to campers as issues arise, maintaining open communication with co-counselor and camp leadership.
      4. Demonstrate enthusiasm and positive attitude towards campers, co-workers, and the Museum, serving as a positive role model for children.
      5. Work directly with teaching artists and a team of camp counselors to prepare all materials and studio spaces. This includes ensuring that studio spaces are organized, clean, and ready for the day.
      6. Support Teaching Artists with classroom management and during workshop instruction as needed and lead smooth transitions between scheduled activities.
      7. Support campers with art projects as needed and provide encouraging dialogue with open ended questions and constructive feedback.
      8. Ability to problem solve and respond to behavioral issues proactively and report them to SAM Camp Senior Counselor and SAM Education staff on a regular basis.
      9. Represent the Museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
      10. Other duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

      1. Must be at least 16 years old for Counselor position and 18 years old for Senior Counselor position.
      2. Experience working with children in an educational setting.
      3. Interest in elementary education, art, camp, and/or museums, social work, developmental psychology, or youth mentorship.
      4. Experience with a variety of visual art mediums preferred, but not required.
      5. Ability to work efficiently and prioritize tasks.
      6. Ability to represent the Museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
      7. Ability to adhere to Museum policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
      8. Able to take initiative, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
      9. Ability to work with co-workers, vendors, and volunteers professionally and tactfully.
      10. Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.

      WORKING CONDITIONS:

      Exposure : Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor sites.

      PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      Stationary Work : Approximately 90% of time is spent is spent moving around the work area. Extended periods of standing may be required when working at camp events.

      Communication : Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.

      Moving : The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving files, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to regularly position self to access files.

      Office Work : Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
