    • Works with the bus driver to ensure that student needs and management are maintained during scheduled bus routes.
    • Maintains and implements the established rules and procedures for transportation services.
    • Adheres to set schedules.
    • Maintains appropriate student management and reports student incidents/accidents to the appropriate supervisor(s).
    • Assists with seating assignments for students.
    • Provide physical and emotional support for students.
    • Assist with getting students in their appropriate seats, buckling seat belts, and the use of other safety equipment.
    • Assist with health care situations (wiping noses, saliva) as well as outerwear, shoes, etc.
    • Maintains proper cleanliness of student seating area to avoid spreading of germs.
    • Assist with instructing proper loading, unloading, proper interactions and safe conduct to students while being transported.
    • Communicate with department personnel, school personnel and parents about student’s bus behavior and/or needs.
    • Assists with bus evacuation drills in accordance with approved procedure.
    • Complete and submit all required reports and documentation.
    • Assist with operating special equipment.
    • May need to provide special medical procedures for students.
    • Maintains a neat, clean and professional appearance.
    • Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
    • Maintains high level of confidentiality and ethical behavior at all times.
    • Follows district policies and procedures and safety regulations.
    • The Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation, according to specific needs will make task assignments for this position. The administration may have additional input in identifying other preferred qualifications and/or appropriate duties that may exceed those described above which are consistent with the function of a Bus Aide.
    • Accepts other directives from the Director of Transportation, Assistant Director of Transportation, and the Superintendent that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Valparaiso Community School District and are required for the successful operation of the Valparaiso Community Schools Transportation Department.
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
    • Must be 18 years of age.
    • Able to pass physical and pre-employment drug testing.
    • Maybe required to have TB test on yearly basis.
    • Able to work with and understand special needs children and the equipment needed for their safe transportation.
    • Confidential, trustworthy, self-motivated, attentive to details and have the ability to work efficiently and patiently under pressure and stressful conditions.
    • Able to quickly analyze a situation and communicate timely solutions.
    • Demonstrate well-developed communication skills both verbal and written, necessary to interact in a professional manner to project a positive image that is consistent with Valparaiso Community School District philosophy.
    • Willingness to improve and/or develop job-related skills.
    • Excellent work habits, attendance record and must successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
    • Shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District and must participate in the mandatory random drug/alcohol testing program.
    • Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of standing, walking, sitting, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (25 pounds or more) as well as use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
    • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, odors, humidity, vibrations, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity, but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range.

      Compensation: $13.85 base hourly + $2.00 addendum rate for Special Education Trained Bus Aides

      Summary: Assists with the safe transportation of students to and from designated schools on assigned special bus route(s) or other destinations in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Valparaiso Community School District Board of Trustees.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
      1. Works with the bus driver to ensure that student needs and management are maintained during scheduled bus routes.
