      Job Title: School Health Technician Job Code: 444

      Department/Location: School Site FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

      Reports to: School Principal Date: November 5, 2006

      Summary and relationship to the curriculum: All classified positions will strengthen the delivery of instruction in support of the system’s mission. This position performs moderately complex health related procedures; assists students in administering therapeutic interventions established by the school nurse under direction of student’s physicians; and monitors student’s progress and condition to enhance the educational environment of medically fragile students.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

      1. Provides safe/effective first aid response and treatment including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to injured or ill students or school personnel.

      1. Serves as Team Leader for Emergency Response Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Team.

      1. Follows all Health Related Services Department guidelines and protocols to ensure student health and safety.

      1. Monitors communicable diseases and keeps the school nurse and building administrator apprised.

      1. Works as a team member to support the efforts and direction of the Health Related Services Department.

      1. Responds to emergency situations and effectively communicates the observed condition or situation to school or emergency medical personnel.

      1. Reads and interprets documents received and the Health Service Manual, as well as follows verbal or written instructions given by the school nurse or building administrator.

      1. Uses the appropriate assessment tool provided to facilitate decision making skills which will provide the school nurse with appropriate information regarding a student’s health status and need for further evaluation or referral.

      1. Maintains the required school entry mandates, such as immunization records and Ear/Eye/Dental forms. Provides parents with the appropriate instructions for meeting these requirements. Reports any difficulties directly to the building principal and school nurse.

      1. Interacts with parents, students, and staff members in a professional manner.

      1. Adheres to the medication guidelines and assists students in taking their daily prescribed medication.

      1. Maintains medication records and documentation regarding all health-related procedures or interventions.

      1. Maintains student confidentiality.

      1. Completes professional learning courses and skills performance checks on a variety of health-related procedures such as nebulizer treatments, gastric tube feedings, intermittent clean catheterization, and tracheostomy care.

      1. Performs vision and hearing screening tests.

      1. Prepares and maintains the school medical alert list through the school system’s student information system.

      1. Assists the building principal with developing a school emergency plan. Assists in all emergency drills and keeps the school nurse advised as to any logistics problems occurring with the medically, fragile students.

      1. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Health Related Services Department, school nurses, and school principal.

      1. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Work experience in the medical field is preferred.

      1. Certificate or License Required: Certified Nursing Assistant license; valid license through the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry or the State of Georgia Board of Nursing; or an equivalent licensure or certificate is required.

      1. Language Skills: Ability to read, interpret, communicate and follow medical protocols. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

      1. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to create graphs.

      1. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to calmly relay information in emergency situations.

      1. Technical Ability: Must have considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.

      1. Customer Service Skills: Must be able to interact effectively with colleagues, administrators, teachers, staff members, students, and the general public using tactful yet effective skills.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and lift. Occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel. The employee must be able to exert or lift up to 50 pounds.

      The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

      Professional Requirements: Must serve as a role model to students. Desirable personal characteristics are required. Appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards required. Must be at work on time, adhere to attendance standards and conduct activities safely.
