  POSITION DESCRIPTION
  
  Title: School Nurse: High School
  
  Reports To: Principal
  
  FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
  
  Summary: To assist the school staff in providing the fullest possible educational opportunities for each student by minimizing absences due to illness and creating a climate of good health and well-being in the schools
  
  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  
  1. Plans a school health program, in cooperation with medical authority, administrators, and staff. In accordance with the Virginia Department of Education's requirements.
  
  2. Participates in medical examinations and reviews findings to evaluate the health status of pupils and progress of program
  
  3. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records of students
  
  4. Coordinates school health services with public health services as needed
  
  5. Reports to parents, school personnel, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters as necessary
  
  6. Assists with care for children with special needs
  
  7. Prepares a list for administrators/teachers of students who have specific health problems that might require modifications of physical activities or seating arrangements in the class
  
  8. Reports student/staff injuries and accidents to the building principal, assumes authority for care for those needing emergency assistance, and provides supervision for students until they are placed under their parents’ care
  
  9. Orders, inventories, and oversees the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment
  
  10. Maintains contact with the local health department and assists in exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
  
  11. Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools

  EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  
  Holds a valid state license as either a registered (preferred) or licensed practical nurse

  TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  Ten month employment. Salary to be determined by the current administrative salary schedule.

  Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board’s policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
