      JOB DESCRIPTION

      POSITION SUMMARY:

      Ensure an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness, and friendliness to ensure that students are served nutritious meals. Also responsible for providing leadership and direction to school nutrition assistants.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      1. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
      2. Demonstrated experience in large quantity food production.
      3. Knowledge of safety protocols and proper use of various institutional equipment used in food preparation.
      4. Demonstrated knowledge of accounting procedures, recordkeeping, procedures for food ordering, and computer/software applications.
      5. Ability to interact and work with staff, students, parents, administrators, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.
      6. Ability to engage a diverse student population (racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic) in order to foster supportive relationships.
      7. Ability to communicate information effectively with diverse learning needs.
      8. Written and verbal communication skills with proficiency in English: spoken language to express and/or exchange ideas as well as interact with diverse audiences.
      9. Ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures and perform basic repairs.
      10. Ability to schedule work load in order to meet deadlines on a weekly basis - detail-oriented and thorough.
      11. Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with administration, co-workers, and the community. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      1. Supervises, leads, and assists school nutrition staff in food preparation, serving and the clean-up process.
      2. Plans work schedules for all school nutrition staff and delegates duties in the kitchen.
      3. Understands the nutritional and operational requirements for student meals under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
      4. Prepares and maintains accurate financial records and deposit information from money received. Follows all school division financial processes and procedures.
      5. Follows standardized recipes and instructions in preparing and serving food.
      6. Determines amounts of food and supplies to be purchased and check delivery for accuracy.
      7. Instructs and coaches all employees in the safe use and care of equipment.
      8. Maintains high sanitary and safety standards in the preparation, serving, and storing food.
      9. Ensures that each employee observes high standards of grooming and safe work habits.
      10. Maintains the necessary records required for an effective operation including daily records of meals served, deposits, ticket sales, inventories of food and supplies, production forms, and any other forms.
      11. Evaluates school nutrition assistants in a timely and effective manner.
      12. Projects a positive attitude and on-going enthusiasm for the school nutrition programs.
      13. Develops and implements promotional activities to effectively market school meals and proper nutrition to students and staff.
      14. Regularly checks freezers, coolers, and other equipment to insure functional operation and contacts maintenance staff for repairs.
      15. Attends in-service training to develop and improve knowledge and skills of school nutrition.
      16. Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures at all times.
      17. Uses and wears safety and/or protective equipment, as appropriate.
      18. Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times, assuring respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-student relationship and the essential duty to serve as a role model.
      19. Assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
      20. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
      21. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.
      22. Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.
      23. Attends all required meetings.
      24. Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
      25. Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others.
      26. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures.
      27. Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and building principal.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

      Light work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds frequently. Prolong periods of standing with regular travel throughout the kitchen and dining area to effectively interact with staff and students. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members and students is required.
