      Position Title: School Safety Officer

      Work Schedule: 198 Days/8.0 Hours

      Grade/Level: SSO

      FLSA: Non-Exempt

      Primary Function: Under direct supervision of the Lead School Safety Officer, works with building level administrators to patrol school buildings, ensuring a safe and secure property wide environment, as well as the personal safety of students, staff, and visitors. This position will support local schools and the District as a whole in areas related to safety and security. This position will work directly with law enforcement and emergency management agencies to coordinate appropriate training and drills for students, staff, and the community.

      Qualifications:

      High School Diploma or equivalency required. Post-secondary coursework and experience in working with security and safety areas, e.g. law enforcement and technology systems in school environment preferred

      Working knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws, guidelines, regulations, etc, relating to law enforcement and the K12 landscape

      Proven experience in Law Enforcement or related field, preferably in an educational or similar setting

      Strong organizational and communication skills to develop and implement safety and security programs effectively

      POST Certification

      Clean criminal record, passing a drug screening test, and applicable pre-employment conditions

      The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

      Essential Functions:

      1.

      Collaborate with school administration, security personnel, and public safety agencies to address safety concerns and implement security measures.

      2.

      Serves as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies to monitor the daily operation of the School Resource Officer (SRO) program and other law enforcement issues on the school campuses. Establish and maintain relationships with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency responders.

      3.

      Assists in the development and implementation of security plans for special events involving the school facilities within the District

      4.

      Provide support during school events, drills, investigations, and emergency situations.

      5.

      Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to safety/security in K12 settings.

      6.

      Enforces Board policies regarding smoking, parking, loitering, trespassing, theft, vandalism, property damage, alcohol, drug abuse, and other school rules and regulations.

      7.

      Work designated extracurricular events to promote enhanced security.

      8.

      Must be able to retain POST certification with the ability to carry a firearm.

      9.

      Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, staff, and external stakeholders.

      10.

      Provides training and assistance to site-based security guards, safety coordinators, and/or other relevant personnel in matters of safety and security.

      11.

      Sound judgment and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.

      12.

      Physical fitness and agility to perform duties such as walking, standing, and bending for extended periods.

      13.

      Provides for the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and School District property in accordance with School District policies to provide an educational climate that is conducive to learning.

      14.

      Ability to patrol the grounds continuously, under limited supervision

      15.

      Performs safety reviews semi-annually at each school system site, in conjunction with other departments, to monitor, identify, and correct any potential problems. Coordinates with site-based administrators and Maintenance and Facilities Sections to address and correct safety/security issues on school campuses.

      16.
