      The Scientific Writer is responsible for developing scientific content to communicate the breadth and depth of basic science and clinical research, to augment recruitment efforts of talented scientists, and to enhance the overall reputation of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This position is responsible for leading and developing new web content, and providing input on visual media projects, including video, illustrations, and graphics. Responsibilities include content strategy, literature review, synthesizing, writing, revising, and editing content. This role works collaboratively with a variety of scientific and administrative departments to develop strategy, understand, and create materials to communicate information to identified audiences.

      The Department of Host-Microbe Interactions is seeking a self-motivated and organized individual to fill the role of Scientific Writer. The Scientific Writer works with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital scientists, clinical investigators and administration to tell the story of research at St. Jude. The science writer works with researchers in a wide range of disciplines to communicate with scientific and mainstream media about St. Jude research, primarily research being published in scientific journals or presented at scientific meetings. The role requires an ability to manage multiple projects and develop appealing content on deadline for a variety of platforms (web, social media, print). The person in this position works collaboratively with a variety of departments and individuals at St. Jude and ALSAC to develop ideas and create content that communicate our science to different audiences.

      Job Responsibilities:

      • Conduct in-depth literature reviews and analysis to ensure evidenced-based communication practices provide the foundation for content development.
      • Develop processes and procedures to identify and highlight source material.
      • Create captivating and concrete material to ensure ongoing delivery of new and refreshed content that meets audience needs.
      • Write and edit copy for diverse communication tools such as articles, video scripts, webinars, infographics, case studies, blog posts, and ebooks.
      • Build effective web content based on abstract concepts to communicate high-level scientific information to different audiences through various media.
      • Work with and interview research and clinical staff, subject matter experts, St. Jude patients and families, and administration staff.
      • Collaborate with our partner agencies, internal creative services, communications personnel, information services, and other team members to develop compelling content.
      • Review, analyze, audit and organize existing content to ensure quality and accuracy in all projects as well as compliance with organizational standards to supports business objectives.
      • Maintain regular and predictable attendance
      • Perform other duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.

      Minimum Education and/or Training:

      • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field required.
      • Master's degree OR PhD preferred.

      Minimum Experience:

      • Minimum Requirement: 2+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, English, Biomedical sciences or related field.
      • Demonstrated experience in advertising or marketing, social media, journalism, and writing in life sciences or healthcare environment.
      • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

      Compensation

      In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $70,720 - $126,880 per year for the role of Scientific Writer.
