- Develop and characterize purification processes for the manufacture of complex biopharmaceuticals including monoclonal antibodies, proteins, DNA, RNA, and viral vectors
- Documents experiments, data, technical reports, and findings electronically in an accessible manner
- Presents findings, progress, and data proactively and regularly in group and department meetings
- Functions with limited supervision and is encouraged to work independently on a day-to-day basis. Expectation for independence will increase with time and experience in the position.
- MS and a minimum of 2+ years of relevant purification process development experience, preferably in a biopharmaceutical industry setting
- BS and a minimum of 5+ years of relevant purification process development, preferably in a biopharmaceutical industry setting
- Must have basic knowledge of protein chemistry and protein purification principles
- Must have hands on protein purification experience using AKTA systems and software or similar
- Must have hands on filtrations experience, including depth, normal and tangential flow filtrations
- Must have hands-on experience with basic protein analytical techniques including concentration measurements and purity analysis by SDS-PAGE, HPLC or similar
- Has the ability to learn new technologies fast and identify new scientific concepts to advance purification process development
- Is highly self-motivated and has hard-working attitude with ability to own and drive projects to success
- Has excellent teamwork, communication, and time management skills
- Is proficient in Microsoft Office (or related) programs
- Experience with biopharmaceutical process development in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry
- Experience with monoclonal antibody purification process development
- Experience with DNA, RNA and viral vector purification considered a plus.
- Experience in UV-Vis and fluorescence-based assays for oligonucleotide analysis a plus
- Experience with high throughput process development strategies and liquid handling workstations a plus
- Knowledge of design of experiment (DOE) a plus
- Analysis of data using statistical analysis software such as JMP or similar a plus

Summary of the group:
The Biopharmaceutical Development group is a multi-disciplinary scientific function providing expertise in Process/Analytical/Formulation/Devices Development and Characterization with integrated Bioprocess Engineering, Clinical Manufacturing, and Supply Chain and Logistics operations. The group is also responsible for transferring the processes to different commercial sites in and outside the AstraZeneca organization. BPD group is present in multiple sites including Gaithersburg, MD, and Cambridge UK.
The Purification Process Sciences Group is accountable for purification and conjugation process development of complex biopharmaceuticals including proteins, monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, nucleic-acid based modalities, vaccines, and viral vectors. This group assists in the scale up and technical transfer of processes to different clinical and commercial sites and supports manufacturing deviations and regulatory submissions as needed.
Job Description
The Scientist in this position is encouraged to have a thorough understanding of purification techniques and principles for large biologicals including liquid chromatography, normal and cross flow filtration. The Scientist s expected to design, develop, and execute purification processes to meet early-stage process development objectives and timelines. The candidate is expected to assist in the preparation of regulatory documents.
Education & Experience Requirements:
Scientist :
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or related field.
