- Operate medium to heavy construction equipment such as gradall, backhoe, tractor and trailer (lowboy), dozer, mobile concrete mixer, belt loader, tree truck, motor grader, rubber-tired loader (2 cy. or larger), track loader (2 cy. or larger), vac-all, street paver (movement and operation), small loader (2.5 cy. or larger) and 12-ton vibratory roller.
- Operate air compressor, five (5) ton rollers, asphalt curb machine, tractor mower, flail mower in connection with construction, or maintenance projects;
- Operate light equipment such as a street sweeper, bucket truck, street flusher, belt loader, sandblaster, rubber tire roller, compressor truck, rubber tire loader, mist/straw blower, stump remover, dump truck (6 wheel), and 20- yard pack;
- Assists crew members with road construction, highway maintenance, and/or landfill operations;
- Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment from vehicles;
- Promptly responds to assigned tasks when notified of reporting requirement for inclement weather/emergency conditions operations;
- Operates equipment with spreader and/or snow plow and effectively removes snow and ice from assigned area;
- Safely operates vehicles/equipment according to weather and road conditions;
- Accurately reads maps to confirm that assigned area is plowed in proper order and no roads are missed;
- Participate in work-site safety set-up, e.g., setting barricades and cones, prepping for excavation, and assist with utility locates and prepping for confined space entry;
- Use traffic and control techniques to control high/low-speed vehicular traffic movement;
- Prepare reports and maintain records of daily work logs and order forms;
- Check vehicles daily to verify interior/exterior cleaning duties, tires and air pressure, and ensure engine fluid/hydraulic fluid levels, are adjusted to meet prescribed standards;
- Perform pre/post trip inspections to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition;
- Participate as an on-call, essential employee in the Department’s Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
- Employees are expected to work overtime as needed.
- Assists crew members in performing semi-skilled tasks, and perform other related duties as assigned,
- Perform crew operations work, which may include other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general, occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
- Performs manual work in the accomplishment of semi-skilled duties related to the construction of drainage structures and highway components.
- Typical duties include: constructing or aiding in the construction of drainage structures, bridge members, box culverts, curbs & gutters, concrete driveways and steps.
- Operates power mowers, both push type and self-propelled, roto-tillers, weedeaters, chainsaws and other maintenance equipment, including hand rake, hand shovel.
- Completion of a standard grade school course plus
- A valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory airbrake and tanker endorsements is required upon appointment to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.
- Candidate must complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.
- Two (2) years of experience operating a 6 or 10-wheel dump truck with attachments and the removal of snow.
- Experience operating light construction-based equipment. (Ex. power mowers, both push type and self-propelled, roto-tillers, weedeaters, chainsaws and other maintenance equipment, including hand rake, hand shovel, wheelbarrow, bush axe, etc.)
Submit a copy of Class "A" with airbrake and tanker endorsements and a current DOT physical certification card.
Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record.
Must pass pre-employment physical examination, drug, and alcohol testing.
Wear required safety equipment, shoes, and uniforms while on duty.
Possess and maintain a valid Class “A”.
Be able to work outdoors in all types of weather and participate as an essential employee in the Department's snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency special activities as assigned.
Must be willing to participate as an "essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, and during other emergency/special activities as assigned.
Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
- Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.

About the Position :
The Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill multiple Seasonal CDL Operator positions (CDL A) in the Office of Highway Maintenance. These are additional staff support positions and will be filled temporarily for the 2024-2025 Snow and Ice Season. Hours will vary depending on the needs of the department and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to work over-time, if needed. Incumbents perform manual tasks in connection with road construction, highway maintenance, storm drain maintenance and/or landfill operations. Duties require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand, and foot movements.
About the Agency:
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.SEASONAL CDL OPERATOR (CLASS A License) - COMMON DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS
