This is an exciting moment for the South Carolina State Museum as it embarks on its Reimagine the Experience campaign to revolutionize the museum experience for our visitors and expand our impact state-wide. This collaborative campaign will allow the museum to share more of its extensive collection of over 1.1 million objects and specimens and renew over 150,000 square feet with updated permanent exhibitions and immersive multimedia experiences which highlight fascinating stories and people throughout South Carolina’s history. Through these revitalized spaces, the museum will offer our guests the opportunity to connect with each other and the many communities that call our state home.

      The SC State Museum is seeking a Senior Accountant responsible for handling the museum’s core accounting operations and ensuring compliance with state fiscal policies and internal financial procedures. This position primarily performs accounts payable functions, assists with accounts receivable and cash management, supports general ledger maintenance and financial closing activities, contributes to budget development and reporting, and provides administrative support and backup coverage for procurement-related functions.

      The Senior Accountant will:

      • Perform all aspects of accounts payable/receivables. Process a high volume of vendor invoices with accuracy and efficiency. Verify supporting documentation, approvals, funding sources, and account coding before payment. Enter and reconcile AP transactions, ensuring compliance with state policies. Serve as the main point of contact for vendor communication, invoice troubleshooting, and resolution of payment discrepancies. Process and record incoming payments, including checks, cash, credit cards, and wire transfers. Generate and monitor invoices for memberships, programs, rentals, and other museum revenue sources. Maintain and reconcile daily and monthly cash and deposit records and monitor aging reports for timely collections. Oversee petty cash and change fund processes, ensuring compliance with internal controls and state revenue policies.
      • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, ensuring proper classification of financial transactions. Assist with monthly and year-end close activities, including journal entries and reconciliations. Identify and resolve discrepancies in ledger accounts and ensure accuracy of financial data in SAP/SCEIS. Provide administrative support, including document management, tracking deadlines, and responding to finance/purchasing inquiries. Conduct fiscal research and assist in the development or revision of internal fiscal/purchasing policies, procedures, and controls.
      • Serve as a backup for procurement/travel functions to include assistance with purchase orders, direct pay, and p-card/lodging card administration.
      • Support the Finance Director in preparing the annual operating budget, projections, and financial summaries. Assist with the development of financial reports and provide budget data to departments. Prepare financial schedules and supporting documentation for audits and annual financial reporting.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.
      Minimum Requirements
      • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field
      • At least three (3) years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or financial data processing.
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.
      • Knowledge of and the ability to apply and interpret principles, practices, theories and terminology of accounting, auditing, financial and procurement management.

      Physical Requirements

      • Ability to sit for prolonged periods.
      • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.

      • Ability to use discretion in handling confidential information.
      • Ability to work with minimum supervision and instruction.
