      JOB BRIEF

      The Senior Advisor to the Latin America Program serves as a leading expert and strategist on matters pertaining to Latin America Region. Special focus will be given to Northern Central America; familiarity with Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC)-China relationships or Haiti is preferred. The Senior Advisor works in close coordination with the wider program team at USIP and the regional office in Bogota as well as US and foreign experts and think tanks. The position is based at USIP’s Headquarters (HQ) in Washington, DC and reports to the Vice-President of the Latin America Program. The Senior Advisor will work at a 20 percent level of effort.

      The Institute uses the General Schedule salary tables for administering compensation. Offers are determined based upon candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.

      RESPONSIBILITIES

      Thought Leadership, Representation & Communications:

      • Research and write on topics relevant to USIP’s mission to prevent, mitigate and reduce violence, including analysis and commentary pieces, blog posts, op-eds, and other relevant publications.
      • Represents USIP via speaking engagement and other public and private events on issues related to USIP’s work in general, and the Latin America Program in particular.
      • Convene on- and off-the-record roundtable discussions and serve on and help lead formal and ad hoc working groups on Central America and the LAC-China relationships.
      • Carry out interviews with the Press to disseminate information about USIP’s programs and demonstrate USIP’s expertise and capacity in the region.
      • Support the Latin America program in outreach to United States Government (USG) agencies for partnership opportunities, including identifying potential IAA partners and drafting concept notes in coordination with USIP staff.
      • Help develop and expand USIP’s Central American program in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Haiti.
      • Organize public and private events with partners from the region, advise on best strategies to have an impact on peace, conflict, and stability in the region, and propose policy options based on these activities.

      Perform other duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS

      • Must have a Master’s Degree in relevant discipline such as political science, international affairs, law, or related field required.
      • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of professional experience in policy-making environment is required.
      • Must have demonstrated expertise in Latin America (preferably with a publications record), with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience working in and/or on Latin America.
      • Must have strong research, analytical skills.
      • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
      • Must have the ability to work independently in a complex environment.
