Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is seeking to hire an enthusiastic and highly numerate Senior Bioinformatics Scientist based in Foster City or San Diego, CA. ILS is at the forefront of all research and clinical sequencing and genotyping applications that leverage Illumina technologies. Therefore, members of the ILS bioinformatics team will be responsible for the analysis of cancer, reproductive and genetic health, and genotypic data. The goals of the team are to engage with internal and external collaborators, to improve current on-market solutions by driving data insights from data, and to translate the challenges faced by the group into bioinformatics solutions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

      • Statistical analysis, machine learning and bioinformatics algorithms (variant calling and QC methods) to support projects related to clinical applications of Illumina technologies.
      • Research and development of clinically focused solutions and new biomarker discovery through analysis of large-scale datasets.
      • Build robust pipelines and ad-hoc scripts to analyze genomic data.
      • Develop novel and optimize bioinformatic tools and algorithms to improve product performance and patient outcomes.
      • Work collaboratively with other bioinformaticians, research scientists and engineers for various projects.
      • Regular communication of analysis results and other findings to a cross-functional team.
      • Produce documentation of data analyses (e.g. R Markdowns/Jupyter Notebooks), custom software tools or software development activities.

      Skills and experience:

      • Must have minimum 2-5+ years of experience in a similar position including general experience in Life Sciences, Genomics or Pharmaceutical industries.
      • Experience with statistical and mathematical modelling with NGS data; machine learning techniques, Bayesian statistics and multivariate analysis are a plus.
      • Strong data analysis skills using R, Python, or other modern data analysis languages.
      • Knowledge of current bioinformatics and genomic resources and tools for tertiary analysis of genetic and genomic data in fields of oncology and genetic diseases.
      • Strong programming and scripting; demonstrate ability to write readable, well-documented and unit-tested code.
      • Experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub).
      • Must have proficient written, communication and presentation skills with the ability to present to both scientific and corporate audiences.
      • Must be independent and strategically minded.

      Education:

      • Typically requires an MS degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or related discipline.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Bioinformatic Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $145,600 - $218,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly.
