South Texas Blood & Tissue is an AABB-accredited blood bank. It operates nine donor centers in South Texas, distributing blood, plasma, platelets, and other components to regional hospitals and emergency first responders. It also provides starting materials to therapeutic developers, and clinical research services. Its apheresis center received FACT accreditation in 2022 for peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection. As an AATB-accredited tissue bank, it offers tissue recovery from living and deceased donors.

General Summary
Responsible to perform all operational aspects of the Birth Tissue and Cord Blood Collection in hospitals, to include approaching potential donors, completing consent and donor history questionnaires, packaging and shipping donated birth tissues and cord blood for assigned facilities.

Provide world class customer service by capturing and being responsive to the voice of the customer (internal or external, including donors for select positions) through multiple feedback channels in order to resolve issues and drive satisfaction in accordance with the BBG customer engagement, feedback, and complaint processes.
It is essential that the incumbent have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old with a good driving record to meet organization driving standards.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Tasks
Coordinate the process for cord blood and birth tissue collections with hospitals, physicians, and Labor and Delivery staff.
Participate, as needed, in the cord blood collection and / or birth tissue collection and perform handling/labeling in accordance with procedures.
Monitor incoming cord blood units and or birth tissue collections and prepare for transport.
Coordinate and provide educational activities/materials for obstetricians, obstetrical offices staff, expectant mothers, and hospital nursing staff on cord blood collection procedures and birth tissue collection procedures.
Review and complete documentation related to collection.
Maintain adequate level of disposable supplies through request for purchase of additional supplies.
Perform informed consent and medical/social history with all donors and ensure compliance all established guidelines/standards.
Maintain annual training competencies for all required activities.
Recognize unusual results and difficulties encountered in all phases of performances to include purchased goods, environmental, mechanical and product related.
Maintain a close working relationship with the appropriate management keeping him/her informed on issues pertaining to collections.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Requires an Associate Degree from an accredited college or university
Prefer a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Licenses and/or Certifications
Texas Operators Driver’s License
Texas Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) preferred Certified Midwife or Doula preferred
Experience
Requires three or more years of Customer Service Experience.
Prefer three or more years of Labor and Delivery, doula and/or midwifery, sterile techniques, and/or cord blood and birth tissue collections experience.
In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.
Knowledge
Must obtain a working knowledge of regulatory/quality requirements and perform within all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.
Must recognize unusual responses/reactions or difficulties encountered in all phases of collection.
Must have a working knowledge of hospital practices and procedures.
Must be competent in all aspects of collection and labeling procedures for procurement of cord blood and birth tissues following a live birth.
Skills
Must be prepared to identify root causes of problems and select the best course of action when circumstances require.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including being able to provide potential donors with the relevant information to make an informed decision about birth tissue and cord blood donation.
Must prepare and provide all collection supplies related to cord blood collection and birth tissues in the delivery room.
Must have strong manual dexterity and technical abilities in the use of surgical equipment.
Bilingual in English/Spanish is helpful.
