      Job summary

      The paediatric neurosurgical service is both the regional and a supra-regional service. All subspeciality aspects of paediatric neurosurgery can be delivered. We have a state of the art operating theatre with a 3T intraoperative MRI scanner, Renishaw robot and a hybrid theatrewith a cone beam dyna CT (Zeego).Alder Hey is a nationally designated centre for Paediatric Craniofacial services. The multidisciplinary team is led by Mr Chris Parks and supported by Mr David Richardson (consultant maxillo-facial surgeon), Mr Christian Duncan and Mr Adel Fattah (consultant plastic surgeons)and Mr Ajay Sinha and Mr Jon Ellenbogen consultant neurosurgeons. The team performs more than 100 operative procedures per year.

      Main duties of the job

      The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the 7 Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeons and supporting staff as listed above based at Alderhey. There will be multiple opportunities to go to theatre, receive appropriate training in all of the advanced paediatric neurosurgical subspecialties listed above and take part in outpatient activity and MDT's in neuro oncology, craniofacial, spasticity, spine, epilepsy and fetal CNS anomalies. Post holders will work towards maintaining standards, including audit, as detailed in the Safe & Sustainable Paediatric Neurosurgery Services document

      Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe's biggest and busiest children's hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year. It is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in UK and is staffed by 2,800 employees.Alder Hey offers 20 specialist services including being the designated national centre for Craniofacial Surgery and a Centre of Excellence for Paediatric Oncology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology and Orthopaedics. It is a teaching hospital and trains 550 medical and400 nursing students each year. A child and adolescent mental health service is also provided with an in-patient unit based at the Trust. Recent expansion has seen the provision of additional theatres (there are 13 operating Theatres in total) and the opening of a new Neuro-sciences development.Alder Hey serves not only the children of Liverpool but is the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics. The Trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre. The hospital has over300 beds, including day beds for surgery, a medical day care unit and Emergency Decision Unit.A purpose built Education Centre is situated on the hospital site and is available for all postgraduate educational activity.
