      Job Description:

      Reporting to the Director, Drug Reviews and Pharmaceutical Partnerships, the Senior Clinical Pharmacist will be an active member of the Pharmaceutical Benefits and Innovation team within Group Benefits (GB). This role is responsible for reviewing new drugs in development and new indications for existing drugs coming onto the Canadian market with a view of analyzing and communicating the potential impact to the SLF GB block of business prior to the market availability of the drug and ensure appropriate clinical criteria are in place for drugs eligible under Sun Life’s drug plans.

      The Senior Clinical Pharmacist will also collaborate with the Pharmaceutical Partnerships Manager to support negotiations with drug manufacturers and will represent Sun Life externally in the private payer market as required.


      What will you do?

      • Accountable for Sun Life’s internal drug review process, which includes:

        • evaluation of reimbursement submissions from pharma manufacturers,

        • review and critical appraisal of the evidence supporting the therapeutic benefit of a drug,

        • collaboration with internal stakeholders to evaluate the potential impact of a drug to SLF’s drug plans,

        • making drug-listing recommendations for SLF’s drug plans, and

        • establishing prior authorization criteria for high-impact drugs, where appropriate.

      • Monitor, document, and evaluate the drug pipeline, including:

        • evaluation of Health Canada Notice of Compliance and Submissions Under Review databases

        • acting as a liaison with pharmaceutical manufacturers to gather insight into their respective drug pipelines (short and long-term),

        • collaborating with internal stakeholders to estimate the potential future impact of the drug pipeline to SLF’s drug plans.

      • Monitor and evaluate relevant drug/pharmaceutical industry trends impacting the pharmacy benefits industry.

      • Consolidate relevant information and provide recommendations to the leadership team as it relates to the listing and reimbursement of drugs on SLF’s drug plans.

      • Plan and facilitate regular meetings of Sun Life’s internal drug review committee.

      • Act as a Subject Matter Expert in the understanding of new drugs coming to market, evolving drug therapies and clinical guidelines.

      • Collaborate and support the product team to provide insights and expertise from a clinical and/or pharmacy practice perspective.

      • Lend clinical expertise to support inquiries from Business Development, Operations, and other internal stakeholders as required.

      • Participate in meetings and in the strategic and tactical planning of the Pharmaceutical Benefits and Innovation team as required.

      What we’re looking for:

      The ideal candidate is an energetic and highly motivated pharmacist with knowledge of the private benefits industry who demonstrates comfort working with multiple internal and external stakeholders across the pharmaceutical and benefits industries.

      What do you need to succeed?

      • Licensed pharmacist and in good standing to practice in Canada.

      • Experience in performing drug/formulary reviews and health technology assessments.

      • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders in a matrix team environment.

      • Excellent communication (verbal and written), presentation, and documentation skills; able to convey complex information clearly and succinctly to all levels of internal and external stakeholders.

      • Proven planning and organizational skills.

      • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

      • Self-motivated and self-directed with demonstrated accountability and leadership; able to make effective decisions and recommendations leveraging the team expertise and/or independently.

      • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is required.

      • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.

      Assets:

      • Three or more years of experience in the private benefits industry with strong working knowledge of the regulatory and competitive environment for prescription drugs and pharmacy benefits; awareness and ability to anticipate key trends.

      • Exposure to the complexities of drug plan benefits, formulary management and/or health technology assessments.

      • Experience with specialty drugs, oncology drugs, and/or drugs for rare diseases.

      • Exposure to pharmacoeconomic and budget impact analyses.

      The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
