Preparation of all Canadian sales tax returns for CTC and its related subsidiaries. Activities include review of transactions posted to the various commodity taxes G/L accounts, review of analytical reports, follow up with relevant staff as necessary, ensure payment of taxes owing on a timely basis, preparation of accounting entries and reconciliation completed. Due to significant dollar amounts, time must be spent understanding and reviewing federal and provincial tax rules.
Review and reconcile the filing of all U.S. sales tax returns, including Nexus analysis.
Monitor and resolve any filing discrepancies with government account statements and notice of assessments.
Understand and monitor CTC requirements to self-assess commodity tax.
Analyze the implications to CTC arising from changes to federal and provincial commodity tax rules, current rulings, interpretations, and court cases.
Assist in the management of federal/provincial government commodity tax audits including the drafting of responses (and gathering information) to government audit queries.
Determination of taxable/exempt status of products sold to customers. Activities includes researching and understanding various federal/provincial sales tax point of sale exemptions, review of new product adds I changes on a weekly basis and following up with Category Business Managers for additional product information/clarifications.
Work with Director Commodity Tax /AVP Commodity Tax on special projects including process improvements such as automation of filing processes and recovery opportunities.
Completion of Accounting designation with a minimum 5 years working experience with exposure to commodity tax
Excellent working knowledge of Excel, Word, Access
Strong systems and technology background; experience with Peoplesoft an asset.
Strong organizational and planning skills with an ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
Proven ability to work with a great deal of confidential information and maintain absolute discretion
In-depth GST/HST course – CPA Canada an asset
Industry experience in a merchandise related environment an asset
Possess a continuous improvement mindset with specific focus on building efficiencies in compliance processes using automation and other tools
Capable of working both independently and in a team environment
What you'll do
The main purpose of this position is to ensure that Canadian Tire and its subsidiaries comply with the various federal and provincial tax rules. This position supports the Commodity Tax Team in all areas of sales tax compliance, audits, research, and projects for all business units within the Enterprise.
