      Job Summary:

      With limited oversight, develop and implement communications strategy, messages, and content amplifying the Monterey Bay Aquarium as an authority in ocean conservation, and supporting outreach and engagement activities of the Aquarium’s senior leaders; strengthen the Aquarium’s reputation as a trusted source of information for the public, a global conservation leader, an impactful educational institution, and an industry-leading destination; collaborate across departments with aquarium senior leaders to plan focused and targeted communications activities to support achievement of program goals; coordinate efforts with the Aquarium’s Marketing and Conservation & Science teams to ensure alignment and support for the mission to inspire conservation of the ocean; perform other duties as required.*

      Core Activities:

      • Establish communications strategies for senior leaders that highlight the Aquarium’s work for key audiences like decision makers, donors, peers, and the media, in collaboration with the Director of Communications, including:
        • Create narrative and key messages that align with senior leader goals.
        • Develop communication plans that center Aquarium senior leaders as thought leaders in their respective disciplines at speaking engagements, like events and conferences, and executing social media strategy through their own channels.
        • Build a commentary (op ed) strategy relevant to the program goals of Aquarium senior leaders.
      • Create strategic content that reflects the Aquarium’s voice and key messages, in collaboration with Aquarium senior leaders and the Marketing team, including:
        • Create written content for the Aquarium’s website, emails, talking points, speeches, opinion pieces, and personal social media accounts of Aquarium thought leaders.
        • Create visual content such as videos, photographs, or infographics to be used in presentations or shared via the personal social media accounts of Aquarium thought leaders.
      • Execute the communications strategies for Aquarium senior leaders and amplify their voices where relevant, in collaboration with media relations and content teams. (e.g., secure speaking opportunities, place op-eds, coordinate interviews, develop content plans for personal social media channels).
        • Develop content plans for Aquarium leaders’ personal social media channels.
        • Identify and secure speaking opportunities and interviews.
        • Draft and place op-eds.
        • Coordinate the logistics of various strategies.
      • Align, update, and maintain Aquarium website content with the most up-to-date messaging and content from Aquarium senior leaders, as needed, in partnership with content team.

      Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

      • Bachelor’s in English, journalism, communications, or related field or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
      • Minimum 6 years of communications and marketing experience developing and managing strategic marketing plans that achieved organizational goals.
      • Exceptional, demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
      • Experience communicating complex messages and topics in a clear and concise manner.
      • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership to ensure alignment.
      • Keen understanding of external environment dependencies, attitudes, and context relevant to conservation and the Aquarium’s role.
      • Experience developing visual assets for use in presentations and social media.
      • Strong project management skills: experience managing multiple and competing priorities, proactive task setting, tracking and communication to stakeholders and marketing team.
      • Experience working with multiple stakeholders across teams to achieve shared goals.
      • Strong understanding of the external objectives and goals of the Aquarium.
      • Takes initiative and communicates a plan of implementation.
      • Expertise with Salesforce, Google Suite, and social media platforms.
      • Ability to think creatively.
      • Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Core Values.

      Annual Compensation Range:

      $91,200-$116,000 USD annually. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
