- Completing architectural plan reviews for compliance with applicable codes
- Providing performance-based design solutions such as fire modeling, egress modeling, and structural fire resistance analyses
- Managing multiple project deadlines with varying priorities
- Act as the liaison between the client and project team for meeting the client’s project goals and objectives for the overall scope, schedule, and budget
- Prepare and monitor project plans, schedule resources and expenditures, and prepare and communicate budgets to the project team
- Manage data for invoicing and accounts receivable, resolve issues and work with WSP team to initiate corrective actions where necessary
- Assist in responding to RFP’s and proposal writing
- Responsible for production, productivity, quality, and client service to achieve client satisfaction
- Understand and meet the firm’s project financial objectives by forecasting current and future requirements
- Supervise technical team and provide technical oversight
- Adhere to the firm’s QA/QC process
- Participate in client presentations
- Assist in training and mentoring other team members
- Represent the company in a professional manner in all dealings with owners, architects, engineers, vendors, contractors, and other design and construction professionals
- Strengthens job knowledge and technical expertise by participating in educational opportunities, writing professional publications, participating in technical organizations and obtaining certifications in area of expertise and participating in the firm’s Technical Committee as requested
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
- Remain current in latest fire and life safety engineering techniques and practices.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and authorities having jurisdiction on building and infrastructure improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or closely related discipline.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in fire protection engineering/life safety and prior Code consulting experience.
- Proficient knowledge of fire protection and life safety engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to fire and life safety project work-related issues.
- Proficient knowledge with ICC codes, NFPA standards, and Accessibility standards.
- Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation and new design projects.
- Working knowledge with fire and life safety process, systems, and concepts.
- Working knowledge of relevant MEP system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
- Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
- Proficient understanding of project financial metrics.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities, structures and systems, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- Strong organizational, decision-making, and analytical skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., Revit, AutoCAD), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, calculations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Essential Professional Licensure/Certification a plus.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering a plus.
- Healthcare project experience a plus
- Fire modeling experience a plus
This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Senior Consultant - Fire and Life Safety Engineer for our Boston, MA office.
Serve as project manager and senior fire life safety engineer/code consultant for multiple new construction projects and existing building renovations. Provides technical assistance and guidance for due diligence studies, design and construction of fire and life safety systems on building projects in the public and private sector. Responsibilities include code research, architectural plan review, concept development, and optimal integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification systems, smoke control, egress analysis, and building and fire code analysis review and compliance. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding code requirements, life safety plans, compliance alternatives, and performance-based design concepts. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
