      Job Description:

      The Senior Consultant, Strategy and Planning will report directly to the Director, Strategic Initiatives, and will support leaders in GRS with strategy development and planning. This person will be accountable for providing business support and strategic thinking to enable the current and evolving business unit strategy including development of the Strategic and Business Plans, coordination of cross-GRS efforts to achieve key business objectives, and engagement of internal and external partners and stakeholders in the assessment of GRS (Group Retirement Services) strategic opportunities. The role will support the AVP to develop and implement GRS’ strategy, business management operating systems as well as take on specific cross- functional assignments.

      Success in this role requires critical thinkers with a passion for identifying & solving business problems, effective communicators with experience working with senior leaders, and team players that love to be part of fast-paced teams and can quickly foster relationships with peers in the organization.

      What will you do?

      1) Market & business intelligence

      • Follow market trends and competitor actions in the GRS space, and perform market analysis to identify any special actions that need to be taken
      • Gathering and analyzing internal business performance metrics, and communicating key finds with GRS leaders

      2) Strategy design and development

      • Translate ambiguous strategic goals and issues into clearly defined problem statements, hypotheses, and corresponding analyses
      • Challenge thinking and provide perspectives, strategic frameworks, and analysis support to help businesses and functions advance ideas on focus topics, and answer critical strategic questions
      • Define research plan and execute research on external trends and competitive environment; business and financial analysis; competitive positioning analysis; and strategy articulation
      • Extract relevant insights by deducing implications from analyses and make recommendations
      • Create financial and business models to assess future state financial benefits and costs, and develop roadmaps for execution
      • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support the achievement of deliverables and overall objectives.
      • Acquire knowledge in a targeted way for problems at hand, creatively utilizing a variety of sources, e.g. public, internal teams, past work
      • Synthesize findings into a clearly articulated storyline, enabling leaders to make timely data-driven product, market-development, and distribution decisions
      • Co-lead delivery of strategy projects across GRS in partnership with Canadian Strategy and cross-business strategy teams

      3) Strategic initiative planning and oversight

      • Coordinate the planning and prioritizing of the GRS strategic initiatives portfolio
      • Track progress of initiatives and key decisions taken
      • Prepare and present both formal and informal updates on analysis/recommendations for stakeholders including senior executives
      • Ensure broader audience of GRS leaders are kept informed of our progress on strategic initiatives
      • Prepare reports on progress of GRS OKRs to different audiences including Board, CET, and GRSLT

      4) GRS Strategic Plan

      • Coordinate efforts in defining GRS objectives, priorities and key actions
      • Gather internal inputs and identify key elements to include in annual GRS strategic plan, including market trends, financial outlooks, strategic priorities & initiatives, and risk areas.

      What do you need to succeed?

      • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.
      • University degree in business administration, economics, engineering (or similar), coupled with other relevant post-secondary education (ex: MBA, M. Sc.)
      • Minimum of 3 years experience in strategy development, leading significant business initiatives, or in a business consulting role
      • Demonstrated experience leading strategic initiatives, including planning, scheduling, and developing project structure / performance reporting
      • Strong problem-solving and data analysis skills
      • Minimum of 2 years experience using various data analysis tools and techniques to help analyse problems, identify opportunities, and measure strategy effectiveness/targeted outcomes
      • Ability to learn quickly and deliver results in a fast-paced, challenging, and dynamic business environment
      • Superior interpersonal skills, strong leadership skills, and excellent influencing capabilities
      • Effective planning and analytical skills, ability to focus on the critical business issues in a data-driven and fact-based manner
      • Effective relationship management skills to effectively manage relationships across the organization and deliver results in a cross-functional context
      • Strong presentation and written communication skills with significant exposure to senior management
      • Ability to craft compelling story telling leveraging strong communication and synthesis skills, with a demonstrated ability to build effective presentations intended for executive audiences
      • Ability to think at the detailed diagnostic level as well as at the higher opportunity level

      What will be nice to have?

      • Experience in wealth management, life insurance, or other financial services industry
      • Strong understanding of Canadian financial regulatory landscape and key industry trends
      • Working knowledge of one or more SLF Canada business units

      The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
