- Provide legal advice to business clients on applicable laws, statutes, regulations or court decisions in Quebec.
- In conjunction with internal compliance partners, provide local oversight for compliance with Quebec laws.
- Proactively identify and communicate risk to internal customers and provide recommendations on how to mitigate that risk.
- Anticipate, develop, negotiate, implement and manage innovative solutions to legal problems.
- Build and maintain strong internal client relationships in the Montreal office and beyond; hold frequent, independent contact with internal clients.
- Prepare legal documents, correspondence and memoranda to identify and protect legal interests of the company and/or its insureds.
- Maintain awareness of judicial climate, current case law decisions, general trends and emerging issues in Quebec; and educate colleagues and clients accordingly.
- Support local business units in developing and deploying product initiatives in the Quebec market and providing Quebec specific coverage advice as required.
- Translate technical, complex or sensitive text into French in accordance with Quebec's French Language Charter and industry standards, as assigned.
- Revise, review and edit translations, providing final approval, as well as support and guidance to staff for the drafting of texts.Adapt to changes in deadlines and translation/editing processes. Generate and implements ideas for process improvements.
- Communicate in a timely manner if deadlines will be difficult to meet.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of seven years’ experience of relevant insurance and litigation experience.
- Substantial technical knowledge of legal environment, in particular the regulatory and litigation environment of Quebec.
- Strong knowledge of property/casualty business, coverage, products and services.
- Advanced and persuasive written, oral and presentation skills in English and in French.
- Ability to clearly demonstrate a sense of urgency and bias for action.
- Ability to work well under pressure independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to forge strong working relationships at senior levels.
- Ability to effectively articulate legal issues to team members, clients, management and external parties.
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- Admitted to the Bar of Quebec.
- Minimum 7 years of legal, technical and administrative translation experience.
- Bilingual French/English.
