Job Description

- Following & analysing economic & political developments in Sanlam presence countries & economies (amongst others), assessing vulnerabilities & proposing appropriate internal sovereign ratings.
- Development and maintenance of internal sovereign rating models, methodologies and country limits.
- Working closely with origination teams as well as in country management to assess sovereign risk & provide input into the deal approval process.
- Prepare country rating reports, strategic assessments, sovereign & scenario analyses.
- Updating & refining country risk management tools, including country monitoring databases, vulnerability metrics, ratings & other models (eg debt sustainability analysis, foreign exchange reserve adequacy).
- Presentation of topical developments in a country, region, or the global economy, as required by the businesses committees, from time to time.
- In-country visits to supplement analyses with information gathered through interviews with local experts & officials (i.e., IMF in-country representatives, officials from the Central Bank & the Ministry of Finance, local & international journalists & the private sector).
- Ongoing monitoring of limits and exposures in the portfolio, from a Sovereign Risk perspective.
- Assistance in resolving breaches.
- Interaction with front office on debt funding initiatives.
- Maintain credit files (electronic format) of sovereign risk analysis, in good order.
- Take responsibility for reporting requirements as allocated from time to time.
- Previous exposure to sovereign credit processes and procedures essential
- Analytical and numerical skills: ability to analyse economic and political risks and impact on Sovereign Risk.
- Ability to produce written reports to highlight matters of importance
- Ability to present country review (and related) documents, with confidence, to the Sub-Credit or similar committees
- General knowledge of business, industry and the macroeconomic environment and financial markets
- Good presentation skills
- Strong organising and planning abilities
- Computer literacy: proficiency in Word and Excel
- Ability to interface seamlessly with other team members, both of credit as well as the front office team
- Economic and Political risk
- Country analysis and comparisons/ranking of risk

What will you do?
Analysis and management of the sovereign credit risk exposures of a portfolio of countries. Analysis of economic, political and credit data to estimate degree of risk involved in extending credit or lending money to various sovereigns and corporates (operating within those sovereigns), within restricted limits. The incumbent may have supervisory responsibilities.
