      Introduction:

      As one the most comprehensive art museums in the world, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) has undergone considerable expansion and change over the years. Most recent projects include the opening of the Art of the Americas Wing in 2010, the transformation of the West Wing of the Museum into the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art in 2011; the reinstallation of the Islamic Art galleries in 2019; the Greek and Roman galleries, and the new Center for Netherlandish Art in 2021. In addition, there are always ongoing new and gallery renovation projects throughout the Museum as well as spaces for working, learning, dining and entertainment. All in keeping with the Museum’s mission of making art accessible for everyone and creating welcoming and engaging spaces for the Boston community and beyond.

      Overview:

      In this inaugural position, the Senior Director, Facilities, Capital Planning and Real Estate reports to the Chief Operating Officer, (COO) and will bring thorough expertise and knowledge of the principles, practices, licensing and methodology for the effective use and proper maintenance of the Museum’s buildings and spaces as well as identifying and pursuing opportunities through partnerships, leases, and acquisition of new resources in existing and proposed spaces for the Museum’s collections, programs and exhibitions.

      In this inaugural role, the Senior Director will provide critical and consistent leadership and focus on the full set of activities involved with planning, real estate, and facilities. This broadened position is intended to provide the contextual leadership, overall coordination, and strategic implementation guidance in these three areas so that the Museum’s total approach to its physical resources is well orchestrated and successfully implemented and sustained.

      The Senior Director will provide the contextual structure and overview for this work which will include capital planning, project management systems, project prioritization, resource management and related items.

      The Senior Director will work closely with the COO and the Leadership Team and other necessary stakeholders and outside contractors who are involved in the Museum’s overall campus projects.


      Space Planning:

      As space planning is a key deliverable and integral to campus planning, it is expected that the Senior Director will have the lead role in space planning and initial facilities programming, as well as in the coordination of space/facilities use prioritization. This position will determine the best methods and approaches to ensure that the planning, design and construction are coordinated effectively, safely and efficiently.

      Facilities:

      The Senior Director leads the Facilities team and ensures the staff is properly trained and equipped to run a secure, safe and efficient campus.

      In partnership with the COO is responsible for setting short-term and long term goals. In close coordination with the senior leadership team, the Senior Director is expected to plan and prioritize key projects which will include addressing deferred maintenance in the museum’s existing facilities. Responsible for long-range strategic planning that is conducive to preventative maintenance, environmental measures and excellent customer service.

      Develop a strong knowledge of the Facilities department portfolio and its staff, including the administrative team, electrical, paint and carpentry shops, utility team and engineering team.

      Will ensure that safety and compliance are paramount for safekeeping the Museum’s collections, staff, visitors and volunteers.

      Proven ability to leverage the Building Management System and analytics to drive for higher levels of efficiency and energy savings while still preserving tight controls on temperature and humidity needed to protect the artwork.

      The Senior Director working with the COO will lead our effort to press for higher levels of sustainability and energy efficiency, and to protect the Museum from changing weather conditions.


      Capital Projects:

      This position will provide overall context, direction on prioritization, and support to achieve timely project completion within budgets and according to plans. This position will play a key role in the development of a multi-year capital plan for the museum, in close coordination with the CFO, and ensure the integration of cohesive planning, design, permitting, construction and communication for capital projects.

      Resource management:

      The management of our financial and staff resources are critical to the successful implementation of this role and thus the Senior Director will work to ensure that our resources are maximized and used effectively.

      The Senior Director will develop and review major budget decisions, large project budgets, and general financial and resource allocations related to campus and space planning, and facilities projects as well as oversight of the day-to-day responsibility for facilities projects including operational and customer service.

      Real Estate:

      The Senior Director will manage all of the Museum’s real estate, including off-campus properties; acquisition, disposition, and leasing strategies of properties. It is expected that along with the Museum’s COO, CFO and other members of the Museum’s leadership, The Senior Director will be responsible for the lead on financing, terms and conditions, and other related matters regarding the real estate portfolio. The Senior Director will hire, train, coach, mentor and evaluate staff motivating and inspiring them to exhibit the highest standards of performance and customer service.

      Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics:

      • Minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in a senior level role in facilities management, capital planning, project management and real estate management.
      • Experience with real estate development or asset management, and coordinating the legal aspects of real estate issues and transactions
      • Excellent project management, including budget oversight and management.
      • Relevant experience in and an appreciation for museums and the arts desirable.
      • A demonstrated track record of implementing creative energy savings and sustainability projects.
      • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and inspire collaboration and team spirit. Must be a proactive and thoughtful problem solver that address issues effectively and timely.
      • Must be a supportive ally in support of the Museum’s efforts and commitment to IDEA values.
      • An ambitious and strategic mindset with a demonstrated track record of effectively tackling all relevant areas of responsibility.
      • Individual must bring confidence, accountability and humility to the task of leading a large service-committed organization.
      • Excellent communicator and presenter with ability to convey complex information in lay terms and at all levels.
      • A demonstrated track record of effectively managing relationships and influencing others who are not direct reports.
      • Effective decision-making abilities, strategic planning and project management expertise are essential.
      • Must be a diplomatic, service-oriented leader with the ability to collaborate with internal and external constituents.
      • Excellent computer literacy, including technology related to planning/facilities project management.
      • Must stay abreast of applicable local, state and federal regulations pertaining to all three areas of expertise.


      SALARY RANGE:

      Full-time Salary, 35 hours per week

      Salary: $170,000 - $190,000, commensurate with experience
