- Lead the implementation of an institutionally aligned vision for the Houston Symphony’s education and community engagement initiatives.
- Steward all education and community engagement initiatives to fulfill vision and achieve stated goals from the Symphony’s strategic plan.
- Act as lead manager for all Houston Symphony education and community engagement programs, including student concerts, the community connections ensemble program with Symphony musicians, youth orchestra engagement, community embedded youth programs, social services partnerships, and more.
- Provide clear and thoughtful leadership to the entire education and community engagement department staff.
- Serve as main liaison to the Education and Community Partnerships Board Committees, including managing the committees and presenting departmental initiatives. Engage in relationships with Board leadership.
- Directly participate in fundraising strategy and proposals connected to education and community activity, including tracking metrics of success, and transparently reporting on initiatives. Work closely with Development department to drive content for proposals and personally participate in fundraising calls.
- Direct the strategic use of and maximize the impact of the musician community performance program for in-school appearances, youth orchestra support, community engagement, and social service purposes.
- Serve as a key collaborator on and contributor to the Symphony’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
- Work closely with the Artistic department as needed to support educational content for Education, Family, Student, and Community concerts.
- Work closely with Marketing & Communications to establish priorities for Education & Community activity exposure; achieve heightened internal and external awareness of education and community programs.
- Perform concert duty for Education, Family, and Community concerts and events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education and/or the arts
- Minimum five years of direct, hands-on experience in management of arts education initiatives
- Proven success in managing a team of direct reports through strong leadership, delegation and prioritization skills
- Proven experience navigating partnerships with multiple school systems with varying, complex organizational structures
- Experience working with youth orchestras and/or community-based youth programs a plus
- Ability to proactively seek out, forge, and strengthen relationships with individuals and organizations within Greater Houston’s school system and multi-cultural communities
- Experience liaising with multiple stakeholders in order to gain buy in and garner support on collaborative projects
- Working knowledge of symphonic repertoire, genres, and artists commonly featured in Houston Symphony concerts as well as experience working with artists and musicians
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment through strong leadership and organizational skills
- Superior writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to a positive, team-oriented attitude that contributes to a collaborative organizational culture
- Ability to motivate enthusiastic collaboration with staff, musicians, board, and volunteers
- Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus
- A highly professional demeanor in all settings
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, some holidays, and to be prepared to work beyond regular business hours

Summary:
This individual will be responsible for implementing the Houston Symphony’s education and community engagement initiatives; tracking and achieving short- and long-term goals; and managing and tracking the institution’s progress towards achieving its education and community-related ambitions. As the Houston Symphony strives to make an enduring impact on the Greater Houston community, the Senior Director of Education & Community Engagement will serve as a communicator and advocateboth within and outside of the organizationfor the Symphony’s education and community activities.
