      Position summary :

      This position has the option to be based in the Plaza in Charlotte, NC in the NCRH building in Raleigh, NC or out of an Operations Center. This position is a cross-functional role between the Centralized Subdivision Design, Distribution to Distribution Substation Engineering (D2D), Extra Facilities Engineering and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Engineering on the Carolinas Complexed Centralized Design. This position will work closely with other Duke Energy employees in Transmission, Distribution, Large Account Management (LAM), Billing, Payments, Community Relations. When fully up to speed, in general, the person in this role will be fully competent in:

      • Producing underground electrical infrastructure designs according to Duke Energy standards.
      • Design and overseeing construction of new and inspecting and replacing/removing of existing D2D substations.
      • Owning the Extra Facility philosophy and guiding LAM and others in contractual requirements relevant to EF charges.
      • Designing and maintaining SPCC plans in accordance with federal requirements and is responsible for SPCC compliance for Customer Delivery in both Carolina’s East Region (DEP) and West Region (DEC).

      The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

      Responsibilities

      • Conducts engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with limited guidance.
      • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills and performance of self and junior engineers.
      • Works as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries.
      • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

      • Centralized Subdivision Design:
        • Responsible for creating preliminary and final design layouts and estimates for electrical infrastructure serving single family, multi-family residential developments and commercial projects
        • Provides designs that adhere to relevant safety, environmental, and engineering guidelines
        • Coordinates with field engineering, customer liaisons, system planning, GIS lighting, and construction departments to ensure that projects are cost effective and completed on time
        • Supports positive customer experiences through timely completion of design request
        • Utilizes integrated assets automation portfolio including design tools, work management systems, and GIS applications
        • Maintains accurate records and files.
        • Promotes system reliability through design philosophy
        • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
        • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
        • Makes electrical load and voltage drop calculations for single and multiphase applications based on customer input and project needs
      • D2D Sub Eng.:
        • Understanding the unique process of writing WOs for DD substation work in the Carolinas and other niche tasks.
        • Understand the unique accounting details for DD substations, project set-up, scheduling, and management of the DD substation process.
        • Knowledgeable of the Distribution Spec book regarding DD substations
        • Understanding the various options of laying out substations and the downstream impacts of those options.
        • Adding a neutral resistor at the DD substation when a customer wants to reduce the ground fault current on their system.
        • Understanding substation transformer capacities and how to determine them, as well as adding cooling fans to existing transformers to gain additional capacity and prevent replacements.
        • Providing theoretical estimates to calculate Monthly Facility Charges for customers who have totalized meters.
        • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
      • Extra Facilities:
        • Be an expert in Carolinas Extra Facility (EF) processes and own the Extra Facility “philosophy.”
        • Manage the “Extra Facilities” process from customer request through contractual implementation.
        • Serve as LAM’s liaison with the Carolinas Customer Delivery organization for customer care, responsiveness, and execution of calculations in timely manner.
        • Support of Extra Facility calculation/process support (consultation, methodology, support) and contract administration (execution, billing, follow-up, existing customer packages).
      • SPCC
        • Provides designs that adhere to relevant safety, environmental, and engineering guidelines
        • Coordinates with field engineering, customer liaisons, EHS, Program Development and Governance, construction departments and others to ensure that projects are cost effective and completed on time.
        • Performs SPCC calculations, analyzes oil filled equipment, and prepares reports for sealing.
        • Develops SPCC drawings using current Duke standards and creates SPCC reports/plans.
        • Provides berm calculations and constructible solutions to prevent a berm breach in the event of an oil spill.
        • Provides construction support and solutions. After construction, inspects newly installed secondary containment devices.
        • Supervises the compliance and recordkeeping system of the SPCC plans, Centralized Design D- D Substation SharePoint and CAST Pro, one of Duke Energy's data management tools used to track and ensure regulatory compliance and houses various environmental documents.

      Basic/Required Qualifications

      • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
      • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

      Desired Qualifications

      • B.S. Civil Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program.
      • Registered Professional Engineer.
      • Advanced degree in engineering.
      • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

      Additional Preferred Qualifications

      • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,
      • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
      • Proficient in principles of project management
      • Experience in the utility industry

      Working Conditions

      • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
