      Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent

      Salary Range: SP4, Level 6, $110,256 - $137,820 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides.

      The focus of this Senior Inspector, Oil Sands Mining is to provide technical guidance and support to the operational oil sands mining discipline. As the Senior Inspector, Oil Sands Mining you will support the implementation of surveillance plans, industry education within technical area(s) of expertise conducted through verification, emergency response and enforcement activities. Share experience in area of knowledge, develop internal processes, contribute to operational planning, and train and mentor staff.

      The successful candidate is preferred to have strong oil sands mining experience as well as, an environmental background.

      What your day-to-day will look like:

      • Manage the oil sands mining surveillance program(s). Contribute to Operational Planning, including risk-based decision making, reporting of provincial team activities, trends and emerging issues, identifying priorities within the program, and aligning with Integrated Decision Approach (IDA).

      • Identify issues, conduct environmental scans, review inspections to identify inconsistences and engage with the provincial team, and leadership team regarding trends/findings.

      • Coordinate, support & facilitate effective oil sands mining (OSM) team discussions and synergies with SME’s throughout the AER, to share information, resolve technical issues, share observations, identify trends and gaps.

      • Set and develop standards for field processes and documentation within scope of expertise, work with leaders to ensure the OSM team has capacity to execute Surveillance Programs.

      • This position will require time in the field in the following capacities:

      • Mentor/coach staff, by joining them on inspections, to share technical expertise and ensure accurate and consistent outcomes.
      • Conduct field inspections to support operational plan and to maintain skillset. At the discretion of the Leadership, participate in On-Call rotation and incident response as required.
      • Provide pre and post- technical inspection assistance, guidance and support to staff within respective area of knowledge on individual compliance verification activities, incident responds, including after hours support.
      • Support other internal stakeholder as a subject matter expert. Where prioritized by leadership, conduct inspections as requested within current Field Centre or elsewhere in the province.
      • As directed by senior leadership; provide support and field representation on enterprise projects, provincial initiatives or assignments related to inspections, enforcement, regulatory and technical issues. This includes providing input for regulatory development of documents including process/manual/directive rewrites and collaborating and engaging with Regulatory Applications staff, and other internal and external stakeholders for the development of synergies to achieve consistency.

      • As a representative of AER in the field, field inspectors will adhere to all safety procedures, complete field site hazard assessments, follow PPE protocols, conduct bump testing and calibration of monitors, follow safe driving practices as per the fleet vehicle policy, represent the AER on with internal and external stakeholders, collaborate with the health & safety team, understand and follow best practices when acting as a lone worker in dealing with public interactions and concerned stakeholders.

      What we’re looking for in you:

      • Diploma in engineering, environmental sciences, or other related education.

      • 8+ years directly regulatory, field operations, or other related experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

      • Regulatory experience including strong knowledge of the Water Act, Oil Sands Conservation Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Public Lands Act as they pertain to mining operations is considered an asset.

      • Ability to collaborate, influence and work in a team environment.

      • Ability to function independently, paired with strategic thinking and planning.

      • Ability to prioritize work based on risk and value, good knowledge of related experience.

      • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgement.

      Additional Information:

      • Pre-placement Medical required and drivers abstract are required.

      • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

      • Additional training is required and can be provided: First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training.

      • Physical demands of this role include the following: ability to drive prolonged distances, climb stairs, ladders, walking around industrial sites, remote locations, spill sites, water ways, sampling, while wearing appropriate PPE and boots in all types of weather of conditions.

      • Required travel is occasional and some over nights may be required.
