      Senior Legal Counsel & Legal Counsel

      Legislative Services- Legal Services # of positions available: 4Status: 3 Regular Full Time & 1 Contract Full Time: 13-month duration Work Mode: HybridHours of work: 35 hours per week Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton

      The Regional Municipality of Peel is seeking driven, customer service oriented & collaborative lawyers to join its Legal Services group to provide high quality and effective legal advice on complex technical legal matters and in areas of high legal risk. Our Legal Counsel can be experts in a particular field but could also provide general legal advice as needed.

      Portfolios: Commercial/Corporate, IT Technology, Real Estate and Development

      Reporting to: Deputy Regional Solicitor

      An overview of the portfolios we have available for each position:

      Commercial/Corporate (Regular Full Time): Advising on, negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial agreements, including procurement documents, associated with housing services, waste management, infrastructure and other municipal projects, in addition to providing general corporate, transactional and municipal advice and services to regional departments, corporations and related entities.

      IT Technology (Regular Full Time): Advising on, negotiating and drafting a variety of agreements, including procurement documents, associated with information technology, cybersecurity, and privacy law, in addition to providing general corporate, transactional and municipal advice and services to regional departments, corporations and related entities.

      Real Estate and Development (Regular Full Time and 13 month contract):

      Areas of real property law with broad experience in residential and commercial real estate transactions, easements, leasing/licensing matters and secured financing. Deals with a variety of land development applications and review, planning policy, matters before the Ontario Land Tribunal and environmental law matters. Exposure to or expertise in: expropriation law, land development, municipal law, negotiation with government agencies and utility providers, and affordable housing law would be an asset.

      What you will do in this role:

      • Prepare, amend and review legal documents, proceedings, Council reports and by-laws
      • Develop and implement proactive strategies that help to protect the interests of the Regional Corporation and to reduce exposure to legal risks
      • Ensure service standards are supported and maintained, and that policies and procedures are adhered to and applied
      • Maintain current knowledge of developments in law and their application to Regional responsibilities
      • Negotiate on behalf of the Region with external agencies, private sector and municipal partners, provincial and federal governments
      • Monitor status of outstanding claims, obligations and compliance and prepares reports on status on regular basis or as required
      • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias

      What the role requires:

      • Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor degree
      • Call to the Ontario Bar and be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
      • Senior Legal Counsel: Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer or equivalent
      • Legal Counsel: Minimum of 1 year experience as a practicing lawyer or equivalent

      In this role you will have the ability to work remotely and attend on-site when required based on operational requirements at the 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton worksite. The frequency of on-site activities may vary on a weekly basis and based on operational requirements. Your remote work location must be located within the province of Ontario.
