- Assists with monitoring and oversight of a branch library, museum, or a major function of the main library such as circulation and technical processing; supports and provides customer service and library and museum programs facilitation.
- Promotes interest in library and museum programs through publicity, bulletin board displays, program brochures, newsletters, cooperation with various schools, community groups, and public contacts; speaks before students, business and civic organizations, and other groups.
- Assists with schedules, assigns work to, oversees, and participates in the work of staff performing customer service, administrative, and clerical duties in support of the City’s Libraries and museum; assists with overseeing the workflow of lower-level staff, volunteers, and/or work unit; monitors that work is completed on time and is consistent with the work quality standards.

- Plans, prepares, organizes, and leads school tours for 3rd and 4th grade students aligned with state content standards and designed to teach all types of learners on local history through a variety of lessons, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and exposure to museum exhibits and artifacts.
- Develops, facilitates, and delivers educational and cultural programs for the community related to City history or topical interests and community outreach for the Museum/Casa Peralta including online pages and social media updates.
- Provides assistance with and coordination of museum operations and event development and implementation; schedules and communicates event details; monitors day-of activities and inventory; replenishes food and supplies as necessary.
- Assists learners enrolled in Project Literacy to reach their family literacy goals; supports and organizes volunteer tutors and related communications.
- Participates in program space and materials development and maintenance, program book selection, and marketing and mailings; assists with partnership development, data gathering, and grant applications and required reporting.
- Plans, promotes, and implements activities and services for the library’s adult literacy and ESL program in support of adult learners raising children under 18.

The Library Services Department is responsible for providing professional library services to meet the educational, cultural, and information needs of the residents of San Leandro. We are looking for energetic and innovative individuals to fill the part-time position of Senior Library Assistant at both the History Museum and Library locations. Ideal candidates will be organized, self-motivated, have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, plus experience working with the public in a library or similar setting. Key responsibilities include outreach and delivery of programs/services to various age groups; working at a public service desk; demonstrating new technologies; and helping with community engagement activities.There is one vacancy assigned to the History Museum and this position may not exceed a maximum of 1,040 hours per City fiscal year (July through June). There is one vacancy at the Library assigned to Project Literacy and this position may not exceed a maximum of 999 hours per City fiscal year (July through June).
Definition: Under direction, performs a variety of administrative, clerical, and paraprofessional library duties in support of the City’s Library, branches and/or San Leandro History Museum/Casa Peralta; assists with monitoring and oversight of a branch library, a major function at the main library, and/or museum; interacts with patrons to provide information and assistance related to reference materials; participates in, plans, promotes, and conducts library activities, programs, and services; provides lead direction to and participates in the work of less experienced staff and volunteers; and performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced-level classification in the Library Assistant series responsible for performing the most complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to less experienced staff and volunteers. Experience and Education Guidelines: A ny combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework or specialized training in library information science, history, communications, education, social sciences, or related field.
Experience : Two (2) years of increasingly responsible library or administrative support, teaching, child development, community organizing, or related experience.
