      The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas.       The Senior Maintenance Technicia n functions as the lead worker of each two-man crew assigned to the Reactive Maintenance Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division. Crews within this program are tasked with responding to calls for service to address sewer system blockages and overflows by cleaning sanitary sewer mains. Staff assigned to this role are responsible for the maintenance and operation of combination jet/vac equipment used to clean sewer structures by way of high-pressure water hoses and nozzles.

      • Serves as a lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion
      • Performs semi-skilled general maintenance with the proper maintenance tools and equipment, following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
      • Operates and maintains assigned equipment and tools. Performs inspections to ensure safe operating conditions, completes routine repairs and/or replacement of parts, cleans and performs preventative maintenance, and monitors need for replacement or advanced repairs
      • Completes inventory counts and monitor tool, equipment, and supply needs
      • Sets up and tears down traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment
      • Performs various manual labor tasks such as loading/unloading equipment, setup of traffic control work zones, setup of combination jet/vac sewer cleaning truck, opening manhole covers, inserting cleaning nozzles into sewer pipes, monitor cleaning operations to identify any issues, teardown of equipment, routine cleaning of truck and tools
      • Responds to and investigate sewer backup, overflow, and odor calls, taking corrective action to address issues when needed. Utilizes assigned jet/vac combination truck to clear sewer blockages, setup containment sites for spilled wastewater, manually move gas powered pumps into place, set pump hoses, clean up solid debris from contaminated areas, and restore impacted areas
      • Inputs data into electronic work order system
      • Supports the City’s emergency response in the event of inclement weather, to include support for debris cleanup after severe storms or snow and ice response for Division facilities
      Education and Experience:
      High School Diploma or GED and three years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
      • Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
      • Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
      • Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
      • Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
      • Moving Company: labor, truck driver
      • General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
      • Tech School Student: mechanical
      • Firefighter: full or part-time

      OR

      An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

      Licensing and Certifications:
      • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
      • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
      • NC WPCSOCC Collection System Operator Certification Grade I, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire

      Preferred Qualifications:
      • NC WPCSOCC Collection System Operator Certification Grade II

      ADA and Other Requirements
      Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

      Heavy Work:
      Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

      Working Conditions:
      Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise. Work is conducted in a crew setting primarily in an outdoors environment in close proximity to heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, open manholes, and open excavations. May involve entering areas with uneven or rough terrain to include creek beds, wetlands, or forested areas.
