The Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean provides leadership in academic programming and services to the campus, ensuring a positive and academically responsive environment to change. Recognizing that Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities have experienced inequities that have developed historically and are ongoing, we strongly welcome and encourage candidates from those communities to apply.Reporting to the Assistant Dean, the Senior Manager, Academic Operations is responsible for providing strategic input, direction, coordination and senior administrative support to assist the Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean (heretofore “the Dean”) and Assistant Dean in developing and implementing the academic goals and objectives of the Division and Campus. The Senior Manager also provides workflow coordination to ensure effective collaboration and exchange of information between the Office of the Vice-Principal, Academic and Dean (OVPAD) and partnering offices on campus and across the institution. The Senior Manager works in collaboration with the Chairs and Directors of academic units and Directors of administrative offices to improve and support evidenced-based decision making regarding academic programs and other initiatives.
Your opportunity:
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean, the incumbent provides strategic input and administrative support in developing, implementing, and championing projects and initiatives, and managing academic special projects. The Senior Manager’s responsibilities includes oversight of staff and operations in the following areas: Student Code and Academic Integrity; Undergraduate, Graduate and Postdoctoral portfolios and UTSC Campus Farm (teaching initiatives) in order to ensure that this portfolio in the OVPAD is running efficiently and optimally; and that proper business processes and systems are implemented and consistently followed. The Senior Manager provides high-level support and advice on both graduate and undergraduate University policy, governance processes, and on academic matters.
The incumbent advises the senior academic administrators, Chairs, Directors, and committees about policy, academic planning, and informed decision-making practices; supervises staff; and establishes and maintains critical connections with senior academic and administrative leaders within the OVPAD and across the University.
Minimum Qualifications:
I. EDUCATION: Graduate degree required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
II. EXPERIENCE: Minimum eight years related administrative experience in a University setting in progressively senior positions. Extensive experience with the University and knowledge of university policies and procedures and an understanding of the University’s organizational structure, including its governance. Knowledge about protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of the University’s mission, the Divisional Vision and Missions, and their intersection with the broader community. Demonstrated experience in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data – both quantitative and qualitative. Experience conducting detailed analysis and research to support recommendations made to senior academic administrators.
Experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects. Demonstrated professional experience in understanding complex issues related to institutional policies and practices and in managing a range of competing interests in the development and co-ordination of policy in a decentralized and highly complex organization. Significant experience in fostering relationships to effectively manage, negotiate and resolve complex issues with multi-stakeholder impacts. Proven ability to develop, monitor, and evaluate strategic plans. Demonstrated commitment to equity. Sound knowledge of managerial practice with experience in human resources. Experience managing a team of staff in a unionized environment, with familiarity working with human resource policies and collective agreements.
III. SKILLS: Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office. Superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Superior analytical and organizational skills. Experience with project management; strategic planning; change management; and process development, improvement and implementation. Ability to establish credibility and work with senior University officers and Senior academic leaders in a manner that facilitates discussion and agreement of principles. Ability to work independently with a high level of tact and in a highly consultative / collaborative manner. Demonstrated ability to empower colleagues and oversee work of multifaceted team, while championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) initiatives and principles.
IV. OTHER: Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. Capacity to think creatively and exercise appropriate flexibility in the application of policy and norms. Ability to work under pressure without instruction/direction. Superior demonstrated ability to manage complex and long-term projects and see them to successful, timely completion. Ability to identify emerging issues of high importance and ensure they are addressed. Sensitivity to how apparently unconnected activities and programs may have unintended repercussions. Proven ability to synthesize and interpret accurately large bodies of complex and nuanced material accurately. Confidence to speak on behalf of the office and provide advice and direction. Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
