About the team/division

This role is to be the Deputy Underwriter in the Marine Hull and War team which forms part of the Marine, Energy and Space division within Hiscox London Market. It’s a two person underwriting team led by Brendan Flood but with wide interaction with other parts of the Hiscox London Market organisation. On a daily basis you can expect to speak to other Underwriting teams, our Marine Claims experts, our Compliance team, our Pricing Actuaries and our Operations group. Of course you’ll also be dealing with Brokers and Clients every day. We work hard but we have fun too; work / life balance is very important. Respect and camaraderie is a given.

The role

This is a multi-faceted role with lots of opportunity to progress. There is daily face to face negotiation, constant work with numbers and a class of business that is technically highly complex. We operate in a tough and very mature market, so we need to be smarter than our competitors. Whilst the maritime industry is at the forefront of technological advancement, the insurance aspect of it has not been. The way we attract business and the way we transact business is likely to change fundamentally over the next few years. This is an opportunity to help drive that change and shape the way we work in the future. It won’t be easy, but it won’t be boring.

What you’ll be doing in the role

• Playing an essential part in the development and implementation of the Hull and War business plan
• Day to day underwriting in Lloyd’s and 22BG, building your own broker relationships
• Direct responsibility for existing and potential clients both in the UK and overseas
• Playing a key role in all aspects of portfolio management
• Be instrumental in the future development of the account: Innovation, different ways of doing business, challenging the status quo
• Working with other areas of the business that help to support the Hull and War book
• The opportunity to take on other things within Hiscox that are outside your day job that support the wider business unit
