      BAT UK IS LOOKING FOR A SENIOR PACKAGING MANAGER – FRONT END INNOVATION

      What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

      • Responsible for the development, validation, and delivery of a portfolio of technical packaging discovery projects, which will require an exceptional understanding of a broad range of packaging materials, processing technologies and packaging solutions. They will also be able to show thought leadership and technical excellence in the areas of packaging and packaging materials, especially in the key areas of innovation, sustainability, and circularity. Experience of working in these areas with Universities, Start-ups and established suppliers is essential, as well as a consistent track record of demonstrable experience of working in FMCG companies delivering packaging and materials innovation into those businesses.

      What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

      • The role holder will be the go-to expert on packaging materials and processing, with a particular specialism in packaging sustainability, flexible and rigid materials development. They will lead key innovation projects with a range of internal and external partners, deliver with technical excellence and robust science, be encouraged to communicate complex innovations in simple language to internal partners, and lead training to the packaging team regards innovations to improve the understanding and capabilities of the team. Demonstration of Technical leadership in packaging is an essential requirement for success in the role.

      WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR:

      • Responsible for the development, validation, and delivery of a portfolio of technical packaging discovery projects.
      • Handover of validated projects to the Packaging Development team.
      • Define and ideate new discovery projects based on our opportunity spaces (Sustainability, Innovation and reduction of Cost and Complexity)
      • The go-to packaging materials and processing expert in the Discovery team, with a particular specialism in packaging sustainability, flexible and rigid materials development, and processing technologies.
      • Be a respected inspiring leader in packaging and packaging materials in areas such as innovation, sustainability, circularity and cost and complexity reduction.
      • Providing technical leadership in these areas, and in general to develop our technical excellence and trusted science across the packaging team.
      • Leading scouting activities to find new opportunities in relevant development areas.

      CAN THIS BE YOUR FUTURE ROLE?

      • Do you have an outstanding understanding of a broad range of packaging materials and packaging solutions relevant to consumer goods and similar industries.? Can you demonstrate where you have shown technical leadership in these areas.
      • Are you commercially aware and able to handle cost and value of projects? Can you show examples of Consumer-focused design thinking?
      • Can you demonstrate examples of how you partner with product development, commercial and operations teams to deliver projects?

      ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE

      Experience Required

      • Exceptional packaging skills in the areas of packaging materials, structural packaging and process development are a paramount requirement for the role but also to show agility, personally engaging in developing the appropriate packaging solutions and leading development through application of appropriate scientific & technical method to challenges.
      • Will have lead teams in previous roles and shown the behaviours required to lead and develop a successful team in a matrix organisation.
      • Will have worked in FMCG/Healthcare/Pharma packaging and will understand the requirements of developing high and low volume packaging solutions meeting demanding specifications (cost, complexity, sustainability & innovation).
      • They will have good inter-personal skills and real drive towards action & delivery.
      • Preferred that the candidate will have had a similar role in Front End Packaging Innovation

      Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

      • Demonstrate exceptional technical and scientific knowledge across packaging structures and materials.
      • Work closely with the other members of the Discovery packaging team to make sure that activities are aligned, prioritised, and issues raised.
      • Set up technical relationships with internal and external partners to deliver the project portfolio.
      • Build excellence in science and fact-based packaging project delivery.
      • Show leadership in scouting, ideating, and integrating innovative ideas into the discovery project pipeline.
      • Be an excellent communicator across a broad range of partners.

      Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

      • BSc/MSc or equivalent experience in Materials Science or similar subject
      • English spoken fluently.
