What is in it for you?
This role is within our US Quality and Reliability Engineering department. You will be responsible for developing our Quality and Reliability Engineering practices, defining the people and technology strategy in close collaboration with the Global teams. The idea with the QRE department is to provide Volvo Cars' internal teams with the right tools, services and practices to enable us to secure the best online shopping experience for our customers. The team is primarily located in Mahwah, NJ, but has close collaboration with teams in the US as well as Sweden.
You And Your SkillsWe are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager, who has previously built and managed quality and reliability engineering teams. You have deep experience in agile engineering practices and follow current technology and architectural trends. You have considerable experience with building and maintaining tooling and practices to ensure the utmost quality and reliability, and are comfortable moving between both backend and frontend implementations.
You will spend some time defining technology strategy along with the team and the rest of your time as the manager of a QRE team, responsible for hiring, compensation, and employee career development. You are also someone who has a lot of experience working hands on with the team to build and develop solutions.
You probably have a degree in Computer Science/Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience and you have at least 15 years working experience. You are excited for transforming and developing digital products, architecture, and best practices, enjoy interacting with development teams to understand their needs and product missions, and with servant leadership and a strong technical foundation you seek to create a fast and fun developer experience. Prior to starting a technical leadership career, you have had extensive experience working hands-on as a Software Engineer/SRE in an agile environment. High people management, collaboration and communication skills are essential in this role.
We think you have• Expert knowledge in all aspects of designing, developing, managing large real-time systems.
• Comprehensive coding experience in at least two languages from (Typescript, Java, Python, C#, Go, or Scala)
• Deep understanding of Quality Assurance methodologies, life cycle and processes.
• Ability to lead across functions and motivate a matrix staff.
• Knowledge of defining and monitoring system quality measurements, including SLO and SLA.
• Built tooling to improve reliability of systems, automated remediation of issues, or improve scalability.
• Experience with containers and container orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) in a Cloud environment (AWS or Azure)
Together with the other digital leaders, you will• Engage, influence, and evangelize QRE practices with development, operational and product groups.
• Improve quality accountability within the organization with well-defined processes, metrics, and goals for process quality. This includes leading effective postmortems and ensuring actions are followed-up.
• Implement metrics oriented processes to ensure service quality targets are met
• Set clear expectations with team members based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Meet regularly with reports to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
• Review code developed by engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy and efficiency).About the company
