      About the role

      The Senior Registered Nurse has responsibility for supporting the Head of Inpatient Services, Sisters and wider Inpatient Unit Team.

      The focus of this role is on the day-to-day delivery of excellence in quality care provision. The post holder will be required to take charge of a shift on a regular basis and provide nurse leadership as required.

      Key Duties

      • To provide a service of high-quality palliative care nursing to patients and families.
      • To act as a resource for professionals and non-professionals involved in palliative care.
      • To mentor, support and develop junior staff.
      • Assessment of more complex patient conditions and support to junior staff in clinical decision making.
      • Provide informal teaching through role modelling and mentoring.
      • To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with patients and those important to them, the hospice multi-disciplinary team, and external professionals.

      Essential criteria

      • An NMC Registration
      • Further study in appropriate area or willing to work towards
      • Have an awareness of the clinical needs of the whole department
      • Awareness, understanding and experience of the principles and philosophy of palliative care
      • Recognises the need for evidence-based practice and continued professional development
      • A comprehensive understanding of symptom control in palliative care
      • Understanding of clinical governance, including audit and regulatory work
      • Ability to assess, provide and evaluate high standards of care without supervision
      • Ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team
      • Excellent organisational skills
      • Ability to supervise unqualified and newly qualified staff
      • Ability to plan and balance priorities
