      Ideal candidate will have field work, logistics experience, organizational knowledge and organization skills. The schedule has the ability to be flexible with 4/10 7:30am-5:30pm or 5-days a week.

      SUMMARY

      The primary purpose of the Senior Safety Technician position is to lead a team of Safety Technicians on short term projects. Coordinates resolution of safety issues involving laboratory environments and safety or laboratory equipment available to personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Provides support to departmental programs ensuring adherence to institutional and departmental standards. Responds to applicable emergency situations involving hazardous materials or fire and smoke incidents. Adheres to institutional, state and federal regulations and guidelines when handling hazardous material or when exposed to hazardous situations. Prepares paperwork for maintaining state and federal agency. Adheres to requirements of department and Emergency preparedness plans.

      JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

      Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazards

      • Recognizes laboratory hazards by completing required laboratory based safety trainings as required to be able to recognize safety hazards in the field and communicate them appropriately to the necessary parties.
      • Evaluates laboratory hazards by participating in laboratory safety audit program.
      • Responds to internal institutional incidents such as hazardous chemical/biological spills.
      • Generate waste request for any spill debris collected and follow up with spill incident report in spill database.
      • Respond and investigate all south campus safety concerns and notifies responsible stakeholders.

      Compliance

      • Tests safety shower and eyewash units throughout MDA campuses in order to maintain proper working order.
      • Conducts weekly Joint Commission safety shower tests. Reports any malfunctions or other disabling problem and follow up on any deficiency noted to completion. Completes Mainsaver route documentation for weekly/quarterly schedules.
      • Maintains supplies needed to complete task involved in the testing and commissioning of SS/EW in new institutional research buildings.

      Program Support and Implementation

      • Provides excellent customer service to MDA employees through the safety seal and lab move program and various tasks as requested in order to fulfill the mission of MDA. Conduct laboratory clearances after laboratories have relocated.
      • Provides training to safety specialist, safety technician, and customers on laboratory safety program management operations, regulations and requirements to maintain compliance.
      • Responsible for providing hands on LN2 training for all research employees.
      • Train new technicians working within the laboratory safety team.
      • Subject matter expert for south campus research and maintenance personnel tasked with recognizing, evaluating, and implementing safety recommendations.
      • Maintain EHS institutional vehicle and generate monthly usage report, provide fuel and maintenance receipts.
      • Other duties as assigned.
      • A requirement of this position is to be competent and expected to enter data into mobile devices while working away from your workstation, where wi-fi is available. In areas where wi-fi is not available, data is expected to be entered or uploaded at the earliest opportunity

      High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in environmental, health and/or safety programs. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
