      This Opportunity

      We are seeking a highly motivated and independent Senior Scientist with scientific and technical expertise in Cell Therapy and/or T-cell biology to join our growing Cell Therapy Engineering group in Gaithersburg, MD. Within this position, your work will develop novel cell therapy platforms and products by integrating protein engineering and synthetic biology with T-cell immunology. You will design and conduct laboratory experiments, develop methodology and then interpret and utilize your scientific data to further develop our technology and products.

      Typical Accountabilities

      • Independently conducts in vitro immunologic drug discovery experiments by applying techniques of molecular and cellular biology.
      • Conducts hands-on primary immune cell culturing and immune functional assays.
      • Proactively contributes to experimental plans and designs.
      • Supports a team and works collaboratively with project managers to ensure the efficient relay of information and forward translation of data.
      • Maintains a well-developed understanding of approaches to drug discovery and applies a broader functional knowledge of the procedures used by diverse project groups to support the department where needed.
      • Assesses and reports data, with little or no guidance, in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of its implications within the overall context of drug discovery.
      • Provides technical instruction to the team and allocates administrative work where possible.
      • Shares and discusses relevant external literature with peers.
      • Communicates and shares information between projects within the Bioscience function and across other functions.
      • Ensures own work, and work of peers, is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations.

      Essential Requirements (education, experience and skills):

      • BS and 10+ years or MS and 8+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Immunology or equivalent and/or professional certifications with 0-3 years of post-doctoral training in immunology or T cell biology.
      • Well-developed understanding and expertise in molecular and cellular biology of T lymphocytes, especially T-cell ontogeny and signal transduction.
      • Design and performance of functional assays, cell transfection/ transduction related to T-cell biology.
      • Expertise in multi-color flow cytometry experiment design, acquisition, and analysis (30+ colors and phospho/intracellular).
      • Proficiency in cell culture of established cell lines and primary human immune cells
      • In vivo experience, including study design.

      Desired Qualifications

      • Familiarity with gene editing techniques (e.g. CRISPR/Cas, viral engineering, base editing, etc.).
      • Expertise with CAR-T engineering.
      • Extensive experience reflected in high quality publications and/or developing pipeline projects in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.
      • Prior industry experience.
