Job Title: Senior Scientist Cell & Gene Therapy Safety, CPSS

      Introduction to role:
At AstraZeneca, we believe in the power of what science can do. We are committed to making a difference in patients' lives by transforming breakthroughs born in the lab into transformative medicines for the world's most complex diseases. We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled Senior Scientist with experience in cell biology and immunology to join our Biopharmaceuticals R&D team. This is your chance to be part of a team where you are empowered to follow the science and make a meaningful difference!

      Accountabilities:
As a Senior Scientist, you will be responsible for investigating novel ways to assess the safety of AstraZeneca’s cell therapies portfolio. You will apply in vitro advanced cellular systems to help drive our predictive toxicology capabilities, focusing on the development and execution of complex primary cell models to predict potential toxicities of cell therapies to healthy tissues. You will also work with other scientists to support experimental studies for pre-clinical safety assessment of new cell therapy candidates, apply primary cell screens and cytotoxicity assays for the safety assessment of novel cell therapies assets, and assess concerns about organ specific toxicities, non-specific and target mediated clearance and evaluate strategies to overcome these.

      Essential Skills/Experience:
      • PhD in cellular biology, immunology, toxicology or similar field.
      • Ability to understand biology around novel targets and pathways to drive scientific testing.
      • Proven experience in laboratory cellular biology techniques applied to development of physiologically relevant cellular assays to evaluate biological mechanisms (including but not restricted to primary cell culture, flow cytometry and ELISAs).
      • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and diverse teams with effective communication skills: including presenting, manuscript preparation, influencing and relationship building.
      • Strong oral presentation and written communication skills.
      • Highly motivated, innovative scientist with a collaborative mentality and a desire to drive personal development.

      Desirable Skills/Experience:
      • Expertise in the design and execution of cellular experiments to determine the effects of biotherapeutics on biological systems.
      • Experience with cell-based therapies.
      • Experience with human/non-human primary cell culture including practical experience with human T cell assays.
      • Experience with advanced cell-based immunoassays such as cytotoxicity assays, live cell imaging techniques, cytokine measurements, flow cytometry.
      • Use to working with SOPs and writing reports.

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That’s why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that doesn't mean we’re not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual flexibility. Join us in our unique and ambitious world.

      Why AstraZeneca?
At AstraZeneca, we are driven by our desire to understand and reveal new insights. We are free from fear of failure, free to ask the right questions, make bold decisions, and dig deep into the biology of complex disease. We are always investing to enhance our understanding of disease, working towards creating the next generation of therapeutics and pioneering new approaches to better predict clinical success. By advancing our scientific knowledge, we are helping to shape the future of healthcare, to create the greatest and swiftest impact on disease.
