Job Description
- Req#: 515299
- Ensure successful, safe, and high-quality delivery of large federally-funded one-of-a-kind projects enabling discovery-based research.
- Further develop and implement the large-project delivery program with best in class implementation approaches; attract and retain highly-qualified staff for execution to assure safe delivery of agreed-upon project baselines.
- As member of FRIB senior leadership team, coordinate closely with peers, staff, and scientific users as a trusted partner to achieve the FRIB goals in support of its mission.
- Foster a positive Laboratory climate infused with values of scientific and engineering excellence, innovation, discovery; and a commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and resilient workforce where all employees feel valued for their contributions.
- Ably represent the FRIB Laboratory to all external stakeholders, including DOE-SC.
- Large Project Expertise – the deep knowledge and understanding of the regulatory framework and DOE-SC expectations to deliver large one-of-a-kind projects for DOE-SC and other external entities, and demonstrated ability to exert sound judgment.
- Scientific User Facility Knowledge – Extensive research related experience at scientific user facilities that ensures a deep understanding of the intent and mission outcomes of world class DOE user facilities.
- Communication – demonstrated ability to effectively articulate and exchange information with stakeholders at all levels—internal and external—to represent the FRIB Laboratory, its activities, and organizational performance.
- Service Focus – the ability to identify and meet appropriate client expectations by offering high- quality services and solutions tailored to diverse client and stakeholder needs and expectations, and to seek continuous feedback from client and stakeholder groups.
- Fostering Broad Participation – the ability to value, consider, and integrate the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties, and to foster a work environment where all employees and users have a sense of belonging.

- Critical Evaluation – the ability to create, develop, analyze, summarize, and present information to make business decisions, establish performance metrics to assess the efficacy and efficiency of FRIB Laboratory programs, processes, and training, and make recommendations at a strategic level.
- PhD in Physics or related field
- 20 or more years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in delivering federally-funded one-of-a kind projects enbabling scientific discovery with annual budgets exceeding $50M
- Experience in delivering one-of-a-kind projects for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
- Experience in leading teams performing and publishing discovery research in physics.

Position Summary
Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.
User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.
