      What is the role?

      An exciting leadership opportunity exists in the fast-paced AFP National Media team!

      As a Band 8 Senior Team Leader, you will be part of the leadership team that drives the AFP's strategic external communications and manages a high performing group of media professionals based within Canberra and right across Australia. You will work in partnership with the Minister's office and other Commonwealth and jurisdictional stakeholders to develop and deliver media and communications materials to Australian and international media agencies.

      We are seeking an accomplished communications professional with a passion for promoting the AFP's work to the Australian public. We are looking for a team player who loves to support the development of their team members and is happy working at a fast pace. The Media team is a very rewarding place to work, and we are seeking a leader to keep enhancing our positive culture and 'can do' attitude. You will need to be able to supervise and support your team, manage resources (financial and technical) and balance competing work requirements to deliver timely and accurate information via traditional media channels.

      As a Senior Team Leader in the AFP you play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

      *This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.

      What will you do?

      The Band 8 Senor Media Team leader will work in partnership with all relevant internal and external stakeholders to develop and develop media and communications materials.

      The successful applicant will work with the AFP Media leadership team to supervise and support team members, managing financial and other resources and develop high quality, timely communications materials.

      You will need to demonstrate exemplary written skills, a strong understanding of the media and a proven ability to maintain productive working relationships.

      You will need to engage directly with journalists to deliver media interviews and events, and contribute to media articles and stories that will enhance the reputation of the AFP, and the public's understanding of our work. Communications qualifications and experience are considered highly desirable. An interest in social media would also be beneficial.

      You will be required to maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as Australian and international media representatives, the Minister's Office, other Commonwealth partners and state and territory police forces.

      Essential Requirements

      • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
      • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
      • Proficient in copy-tasting, editing to deadline, for print, including magazines, and online.
      • Experience in managing teams and mentoring.
      • Proficient in layouts and captions.
      • Understanding the importance, and contributing to a style guide.
      • Having a broad understanding of the media landscape, and connection to media.
      • Showing creativity, and understanding the importance of promoting and protecting brand.
      • Demonstrate good judgement, integrity and discretion in a demanding environment when dealing with confidential and sensitive business matters.
      • Manage complex media matters and responses, develop innovative media plans and broader strategies, which will deliver maximum impact for the organisation and its brand.
      • Directly engage with journalists to deliver media interviews and events; oversee the preparation of proactive media releases and reactive media responses, which will enhance the reputation of the AFP and the public's understanding of our work.
      • Minimum of 15 years' experience in a similar or related field.
      • Ability to work to a roster and be flexible to work out-of-hours, including weekend work, this role is currently assigned to the operations working pattern.
