RWE Offshore Wind GmbH, Hamburg, Swindon, Essen, London, Malmö, Copenhagen

To start as soon as possible, full time, permanent

As a Senior Technical Analyst within the Offshore Wind Resource team you will be leading the layout optimization work packages in our offshore projects and providing your expertise, creativity and technical guidance in the setup, management and execution of diverse wind resource and yield related innovation projects. The diverse task landscape includes leading the development of turbine layout design strategies and related technical frameworks and their application on all offshore projects within our global pipeline, the validation and implementation of the latest models for flow and wake modelling, the enhancement and application of advanced analytical methods and tools to address various project-specific technical challenges, the translation of our research projects into applied concepts as well as the development of new methods for innovation areas such as floating offshore wind. Furthermore, you will be representing the department in external expert groups as well as in international R&D projects with the aim to maximize the value of those activities. Support the development of our talents.

      Your future plans

      • Provision of technical and analytical support as a Senior Technical Analyst throughout the complete lifecycle of offshore windfarm projects from “Greenfield development” through tenders and auctions until the final investment decision, as well as during operations. You act as a technical authority in your area of expertise
      • Leading the design and optimization of turbine layouts towards Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) and/or other optimization targets by applying in-house tools/code and multidisciplinary wind farm design analysis concepts. You have a strong desire to optimize across the board
      • Independent development, prototyping and successful implementation of methods and tools to answer discipline relevant and project-specific challenges with the aim to standardize solutions across the project-pipeline. The main focus will be on leading the development and continuous improvement of our in-house capabilities for turbine layout optimization and multidisciplinary model-based wind farm design analysis and optimization (MDAO)
      • Responsible for the setup, management and execution of internal offshore and wind resource specific R&D projects with the focus to address existing and future technical challenges in the offshore industry (e.g. wind farm optimization, floating wind farms, wind farm control). You are attracted to technical challenges and translation of scientific progress into applied methods
      • Validation and implementation of the latest models for flow and turbine interaction modelling with the aim to continuously enhance modelling capabilities and efficiency
      • Knowledge management of the latest developments in the field of wind energy modelling and relevant atmospheric science and deliver the latest guidance on wind farm design optimization. You understand that driving innovation and continuous improvement is necessary in all areas and you continue to develop ideas
      • Continuous improvement of existing in-house modelling standards, industry „best practices“ and in-house software tools and methods used for various technical tasks. You constantly reflect, you like programming and the wind resource assessment science and you understand our needs

      Your profile

      • Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Meteorology, Aeronautics or Astronautics, Mathematics, Physics, Natural and Computer Sciences, Mechanical Engineering or Renewable Energies with an Engineering focus
      • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience providing cutting-edge technical solutions for wind farm optimization, wind resource assessment, yield modelling, and application of methods and tools to address discipline-specific challenges. Strong experience in working on innovation projects internally as well as with external partners
      • Strong knowledge and experience in turbine layout optimization and wind farm design in theory and practice and in wind resource assessment and modeling of windfarm energy production according to industry standards and best practices and the latest science
      • Advanced scientific programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab) and knowledge with version control systems (e.g. Git, SVN) and object-oriented programming
      • Good knowledge and experience in using open-source tools for wind farm modeling and optimization (e.g. PyWake, FLORIS, WISDEM, TopFARM), related statistical methods, technical loss modelling as well as flow and wake models
      • Reasonable knowledge and understanding of wind turbine technology (e.g. aerodynamics, turbine control, SCADA system) as well as offshore wind farm system design (e.g. electrical infrastructure)
      • Agile mindset, a "critical & analytical thinking" attitude, creativity and problem-solving competence are desired
      • Reasonable level of self-organization, self-reliance, reliability, persistence and organizational skills; excellent communication skills (English) and a “team player” mindset
      • In-depth knowledge of optimization theory and the implementation of common optimization algorithms and the general concepts used within MDAO are a strong plus
