      Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Advanced Transportation Department in the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate is looking for a Senior Transportation Data Scientist for its Mobility Analytics group. Our team works onsite in Idaho Falls, Idaho with a 9X80 schedule with every other Friday off.

      INL’s Advanced Transportation Department performs research and development to ensure that America’s increasingly connected transportation and energy infrastructure is reliable, secure, and affordable. The Mobility Analytics Group identifies and explores technology needs and solutions for vehicle/grid integration, connected mobility, and advanced fueling infrastructure. The group performs technoeconomic analysis, develops data-driven models of technology adoption and use, and simulates demand for transportation energy infrastructure across numerous use cases and scenarios.

      As a senior data scientist, you will apply mathematics, statistics, and computer science to derive insights and conclusions from large data sets. Working with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers, you will design, develop, and test algorithms and software-based analytical tools to operationalize those algorithms. You will adapt machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies to solve scientific problems and to extract new insights from scientific data.

      Responsibilities:

      • Lead cross-functional teams to analyze data and generate results through data analytics, visualization, and modeling on a variety of computational architectures (cloud, on-premises, edge-based).
      • Apply advanced technologies, such as explainable artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), large language models (LLMs), physics-informed machine learning, process-informed machine learning, systems performance analysis, and/or data fusion methodologies.
      • Develop partnerships and collaborate with government agencies, academia, and private-sector companies to achieve project objectives.
      • Publish results of research and development in a mix of referred publications and conference proceedings.
      • Analyze data quality, characterize, and communicate data quality issues to data providers, and design repeatable data processing procedures to accurately analyze data in the presence of quality issues.
      • Work with domain experts to understand the scope and limits of questions that can be answered by data sets, identify key data features as inputs to analysis, and design output metrics that elegantly describe system attributes and behavior.
      • Lead and contribute to proposal writing to acquire funding from diverse funding sponsors.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Level 3: Master’s degree in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical and Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or PhD and 2 years relevant experience.
      • Level 4: Master’s degree in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical and Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or related field with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or PhD and 4 years relevant experience.
      • Experience in data science, data analysis, and software development using Python, C#, Java, C++, R or similar.
      • A proven publication record in transportation or fueling/charging infrastructure research.

      Desired Education, Skills, Experience:

      • PhD in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical and Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or related field.
      • Proficiency collecting, managing, and analyzing large transportation modeling and simulation tools; and performing trade-off studies and technoeconomic analysis to answer research questions related to transportation/energy infrastructure.
      • Experience with software version control and repository management (e.g., Git).

      Physical Requirements:

      • While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard and type, reach with hands and arms, and operate job related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.       Job Information:

      • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($93,204 - $191,076) / Level 4 ($111,888 - $229,284) At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
      • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
