- Demonstrated technical expertise and product knowledge in Primary and Excess Casualty Insurance (General Liability, Umbrella, Excess and Commercial Automobile)
- Evaluate and underwrite casualty insurance risks, including conducting risk assessments, analyzing data, reviewing applications, and determining coverage and pricing.
- Uses all appropriate underwriting tools, disciplines, and knowledge of strategies to ensure underwriting guidelines are followed.
- General understanding and ability to use pricing models, participate in rate monitoring and perform market analysis to identify future areas for growth.
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders to drive new business opportunities and build a strong book of business.
- Stay updated with territory issues, industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions to identify potential risks and opportunities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as claims, risk engineering, and legal, to assess and manage risks, resolve issues, and optimize business outcomes.
- Provide excellent customer service by promptly responding to inquiries, addressing concerns, and resolving issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Contribute to the achievement of business targets, including premium growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
- Participate in training, professional development, and knowledge-sharing activities to stay updated with industry best practices and enhance underwriting skills.
- 5-7 years of experience in casualty underwriting, preferably in the Canadian market.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Professional designations (CIP, FCIP, CRM) would be an asset.
- Knowledge of casualty insurance products (including primary automobile), coverages, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment techniques.
- Ability to analyze data, interpreting financial statements, and utilizing underwriting tools and software.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to balance profitability and risk management.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Knowledge of Canadian insurance regulations and market trends.
- Ability to travel as required
- French language is an asset

We are seeking a Senior Underwriter, Casualty for our Canadian operation located in our Toronto office. This position will support our Domestic and Japanese interest business located in Canada.
Sompo provides a service approach by offering comprehensive multi-line capabilities to accounts in select industries including real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, manufacturing, life sciences, technology, Asian-interest accounts, and professional services. Taking a holistic approach to risk management, the unit offers primary casualty (general liability, commercial auto), excess capacity, and commercial package to small, middle-market and large accounts across target industries in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
