      We are seeking dedicated, self-motivated, driven individuals who are looking for trainee opportunities in Clinical Coding.


      Where you'll be working

      The Coding Unit at St George Hospital is a supportive team who provides a high quality and specialised coding service. The casemix is complex and ranges across surgical, medical, aged care and mental health services.

      The Clinical Coder Trainee is required to provide accurate and timely classification of inpatient episodes utilising the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Twelfth Edition, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) and the Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI). This role is for trainee clinical coders who are seeking coding experience in a major teaching hospital. Intensive training will be provided by experienced Coding Educators; thus training cost agreements apply (see attachment enclosed for further details).

      Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

      All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.

      A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

      In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

      Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

      1. Completion of a relevant Clinical Coding course (ICD 10 AM) as an entry level coder.
      2. Willingness to obtain proficiency in medical terminology.
      3. Demonstrated strong analytical skills and proven attention to detail
      4. Ability to use computer hardware, software applications and electronic systems.
      5. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to deal confidently and courteously with key stakeholders.
      6. Demonstrated organisational skills with proven ability to ensure work is completed within coding timelines including management of competing priorities.
      7. Capacity to work independently under broad supervision and to undertake a diverse range of tasks as an effective member of a team
      8. Ability to improve and contribute to improvements in coding administrative practices and procedures.
