- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.
- Supervises the serving of and serves felony and misdemeanor warrants and civil papers; arrests individuals named in warrants; conducts investigations to locate individuals named in criminal and civil papers; performs extradition of alleged criminals from other jurisdictions to satisfy open warrants; executes lunacy or juvenile pickup orders; and transports prisoners to County jail, medical facilities, mental institutions, or juvenile detention center.
- Supervises the provision of/provides courtroom security; attends hearings and provides testimony in judicial proceedings as required; maintains a security presence to ensure safety of court personnel, to identify and prevent disturbances of court proceedings, and prevent violence or use of weapons; assists with courtroom proceedings and documentation process as required; conducts security checks of courthouse offices, judges' chambers, parking lots, or other areas of courthouse; performs electronic and visual security screening of jurors, spectators, or other individuals; assists detention officers with security/management of inmates in court; and secures and detains new prisoners.
- Supervises the transportation of and transports inmates to/from assigned locations such as courts, jails, detention center, correctional institutions, prisons, medical facilities, regional youth detention centers, or elsewhere as directed; and provides safety and security during transport.
- Supervises the enforcement of and enforces jail rules, regulations, and procedures; maintains security of facility; monitors and directs inmate activities; takes headcount of inmates as required; reports unusual observations to superiors; conducts security inspections and searches of inmates' person and living quarters for unauthorized items including weapons, drugs, and smoking paraphernalia; supervises and escorts inmates from one area of the jail to another; receives/releases inmates transferred to/from the facility and processes all related documentation; and restrains violent/unruly arrestees and prisoners.
- Supervises the patrolling of and patrols designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; conducts surveillance and investigations into illegal activities; prevents/discovers commission of crime; apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals, fugitives, and offenders; writes citations; supervises the enforcement of and enforces traffic laws; uses radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws; and initiates contact with individuals driving motor vehicles to determine involvement in criminal activity.
- Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information/assistance from the public, news media, court and medical personnel, attorneys, inmates, officers, various agencies, employees, officials, supervisors, or other individuals.
- Enforces local and state codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations, both traffic and criminal, to protect life and property, to promote security, and to maintain law and order; maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, regulations, codes, and criminal/civil case law; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; and attends shift meetings and in-service training as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing state/municipal policies, procedures, codes, and civil/criminal laws.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
- Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AS400, Police Central, GCIC, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Operates or utilizes various equipment, firearms, Taser, handcuffs, batons, intoximeters, fingerprint machine, radio, personal protective gear, electronic door panels, camera systems, and other supplies in order to complete work assignments.
- Communicates with IT Department, Judicial Departments other law enforcement agencies, Probation Officers, other County employees, third party service contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Instructor-level certifications in multiple weapon systems (pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc.)
- Experience designing and running firearms qualification courses
- Familiarity with local/state/federal range safety regulations
- Glock Armorer
- Knowledge of local government operations, law enforcement related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in the use and safety of firearms, with knowledge of range safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to get along with others and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evening meetings.
- Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.
- Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
- Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting purposes.
- Ability to operate a copying machine.
The purpose of this position is to assist in supervising daily operations and staff on an assigned shift of an assigned unit within a division of the Sheriff's Office. Incumbents are assigned to one of the following units: Jail, Support Services, Field Operations, or Special Investigations. Duties will vary according to area assignment. This is the first of the three level Sheriff Sergeant series.
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of related experience in law enforcement, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must possess and maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as a certified General and Firearms Instructor. May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications depending on area of assignment. Five (5) years of experience as a firearms instructor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers. The noise level in the work environment may be at times moderate to loud.
