      Job Summary:

      The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is one of the largest publicly operated shooting facilities in the country. Our world-class shooting range is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and has received a Five Star rating from the National Association of Shooting Ranges. Located on 1,650 acres in north Phoenix, the Ben Avery Shooting Facility averages more than 240,000 shooters per year. The facility offers a fun and safe environment for shooters of all experience levels and strives to provide a quality recreation experience for all users.

      Description of Duties: The Range Master will be responsible for overseeing the Main Range 67 point public firing line and providing information and services regarding firearms techniques, hunter education and public relations. Work schedule will consist of mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends in a noisy environment, which may include working in extreme heat & cold, wind and/or rain.

      Job Duties:

      -Completing assignments independently with little supervision and representing the Supervisor and the Department on a shift-by-shift basis in his/her absence
      -Transfer cash register monies, enforce range safety procedures and standards, detect and report vandalism and trespass infractions
      -Detect and fix various maintenance issues such as pulling trash and cleaning up brass and deal with the 67 point public firing line
      -Oversee the daily activities of volunteer Range Safety Officers and assist and instruct the public on firearms usage and safety
      -Directly responsible for the operation and safe use of the public firing line
      -Provides program and range information and aids in interpreting rules and regulations to customers
      -Collects fees for shooting events, classes, main range customers, and campers; enters transactions into PC cash register
      -Performs other duties as assigned

      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

      The candidate will have knowledge of methods and procedures of firearms safety and education information; knowledge of firearms and archery; construction and maintenance, or a related field; knowledge of firearms is essential. The candidate must be skilled and have the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of customers visiting the facility and successfully meet their needs; excellent communication skills with a strong customer service focus; must have the ability to work well with other employees and diverse user groups and resolve conflicting issues. The desired candidate will have experience working with the public in a high-volume, high stress, cashier environment/setting and possess strong customer service.

      Pre-Employment Requirements:

      A level 1 fingerprint clearance card is required within 6 months of hire. Must be able to legally possess a firearm in accordance with 18 U.S. Code § 922(g). Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Medical/Physical examination will include baseline blood lead and zinc levels and a baseline hearing test, all of which will be conducted on an annual basis.

      If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
