This is a 40 hour post funded by Swansea Bay SIFT to support the education of undergraduate medical students on placements in the Oncology Department. The post is offered initially for a fixed term period of 12 months from start date . There may be scope for a further extension of 12 months subject to further funding being available from SIFT. The clinical tutor is expected to support 32 hours directly delivered teaching sessions, and up to 8 hours are provided for supporting professional activities per week.
The post is suitable for oncology registrars or for clinicians wishing to strengthen their teaching credentials. Applicants who wish to undertake this post on a less than full time basis/jobshare are welcomed, and this post could be combined with an applicant's existing clinical post with the agreement from their training program director/departmental lead. If desired, suitable post holder(s) will also be funded to complete a PGCert in Education for the Health Professions at Swansea University.
Main duties of the job
It is envisaged that the post-holder would contribute to undergraduate teaching in the Oncology Department in the following ways:
Providing teaching on history taking, examination skills and clinical skills. This may include teaching on the ward, in the oncology and haematology assessment unit or in teaching clinics.
Undertaking clinical assessments (e.g. mini-cex) for students on placement. Training in conducting assessments will be provided.
Providing tutorials on oncology-related topics (e.g. oncological emergencies) and breaking bad news. This may include simulation sessions in the Swansea University Simulation and Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM).
Providing teaching on other aspects of oncology, such as demonstrating the radiotherapy treatment pathway (training is available if required); and teaching during multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
Providing mentorship and support to the medical students, including helping students to identify learning opportunities. Supporting students in difficulty and escalating as appropriate.
Development of new learning resources, including self-directed learning packages.
Contributing to placement organisation and providing a link between the medical education team and clinicians to ensure that placements are delivered seamlessly.
Obtaining interim informal feedback from students with a view to revolving any issues within placements.
